About the Sleep Calculator

This calculator determines recommended bedtimes based on a target wake-up time and the natural 90-minute human sleep cycle. It counts backward from your wake time so you can wake up at the end of a sleep cycle rather than in the middle of deep sleep.

Wake-up time
The time you plan or need to wake up, entered in 24-hour HH:MM format (from 00:00 to 23:59).

Formula and method

Bedtime (minutes from midnight) = ((W − (C × 90) − 15) mod 1440 + 1440) mod 1440
  • WWake-up time expressed as total minutes elapsed from midnight (hours × 60 + minutes)
  • CNumber of complete 90-minute sleep cycles (evaluated for 6, 5, and 4 cycles)
  • 15Standard buffer in minutes allocated for sleep latency (time required to fall asleep)
  • 1440Total minutes in a 24-hour day used for modular arithmetic

The tool converts the wake-up time into total minutes past midnight, subtracts the duration of the chosen sleep cycles (90 minutes each) plus a fixed 15-minute window to fall asleep, and applies modulo 1440 to wrap across midnight. The resulting minute value is converted back to a 24-hour time string (HH:MM).

How to use the Sleep Calculator

  1. 1Convert the target wake-up time from hours and minutes into total minutes past midnight.
  2. 2Calculate the total sleep time required for 6 cycles (540 minutes), 5 cycles (450 minutes), and 4 cycles (360 minutes).
  3. 3Subtract the cycle duration plus an additional 15 minutes of falling-asleep time from the wake-up time.
  4. 4Format the resulting minute values back into 24-hour clock times (HH:MM).

Reading your result

The output provides three bedtime options corresponding to 9 hours (6 cycles), 7.5 hours (5 cycles), and 6 hours (4 cycles) of actual sleep. Most adults require 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, making the 5-cycle or 6-cycle options the typical recommendations.

Limitations

The calculation assumes an exact 90-minute cycle length and a fixed 15-minute sleep onset latency, but individual sleep cycles naturally vary between 70 and 120 minutes and sleep onset latency differs from person to person. It also does not track nighttime awakenings, sleep disorders, or sleep architecture variations across different stages of the night.

Common questions

Why does the calculation include an extra 15 minutes?+

The average person takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes to fall asleep after getting into bed. The 15-minute buffer accounts for this latency so your sleep cycles align with when you actually fall asleep.

Why are sleep cycles calculated in 90-minute blocks?+

A standard human sleep cycle consists of non-REM and REM sleep stages, which average roughly 90 minutes. Waking at the end of a cycle typically results in less grogginess than waking during deep slow-wave sleep.

Which of the three bedtimes should I choose?+

Five cycles (7.5 hours of sleep) or six cycles (9 hours of sleep) fit the recommended range for most healthy adults. Four cycles (6 hours) is generally considered a short-sleep option for occasional use.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
