About the GPA Calculator

This calculator computes a weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) and total credit hours from course letter grades and credit values. It is designed for high school and university students tracking their academic standing across terms or cumulative coursework.

Courses
A multiline list where each course is entered as Grade/Credits (for example, A/3 or B+/4). Lines must separate the letter grade and credit count with a forward slash.

Formula and method

GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / Σ(Credits)
  • Grade PointsNumerical quality point value assigned to a letter grade (for example, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, F = 0.0)
  • CreditsCredit hours assigned to an individual course
  • GPACumulative or term Grade Point Average on a 4.0 scale

Each line is split into a letter grade and credit value, converting valid letter grades into standard numerical grade points. The tool multiplies each grade's point value by its credit hours to calculate total grade points, sums the credits, and divides total points by total credits, rounding the resulting GPA to two decimal places.

How to use the GPA Calculator

  1. 1Enter each course on a new line using the format Grade/Credits (e.g., A/3).
  2. 2Verify that each letter grade uses standard notation (such as A, B+, or C-).
  3. 3The calculator converts each letter grade to numerical quality points and multiplies by the course credits.
  4. 4View your cumulative credit count and the final weighted GPA rounded to two decimal places.

Reading your result

A GPA is displayed on a 4.0 scale alongside the total accumulated credit hours. A higher GPA reflects stronger average performance weighted toward courses with higher credit hour values.

Limitations

The calculation assumes a standard 4.0 quality point scale and does not accommodate weighted honors or AP 5.0 scales. Non-credit grades such as Pass/Fail, Incomplete, or courses with zero credits are omitted from the calculation.

Common questions

What happens if a line does not use the correct format?+

Lines without a forward slash separator, lines missing numeric credit values, or entries with unrecognized letter grades are excluded from the calculation.

Are plus and minus letter grades recognized?+

Yes, standard plus and minus letter grades (such as A-, B+, B-, C+, C-, and D+) are recognized and assigned standard point values (such as 3.7, 3.3, and 2.7).

Can I include Pass/Fail or audit courses?+

No, non-graded courses or courses earning zero credits are not factored into a standard weighted GPA calculation and should be excluded.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
