About the Grade Calculator

This calculator computes an overall course grade using a weighted average of individual assignments, exams, or coursework categories. It is designed for students and educators who need to determine a cumulative percentage and letter grade when different assignments carry different weights.

Scores
A multiline text entry where each line represents one assessment in the format score/weight (for example, 92/30 for a score of 92 with a weight of 30). Weights can be percentages or raw point weights as long as weight is greater than zero.

Formula and method

Weighted Grade (g) = Σ(score_i × weight_i) / Σ(weight_i)
  • score_iNumerical score earned on the i-th item
  • weight_iRelative weight or percentage value assigned to the i-th item
  • gFinal weighted average percentage

Each line of input is split into an individual score and its corresponding weight. The tool sums the products of each score multiplied by its weight, then divides that sum by the total sum of all valid weights. The resulting percentage is rounded to two decimal places, and a standard letter grade is assigned based on thresholds: A (≥90), B (≥80), C (≥70), D (≥60), and F (<60).

How to use the Grade Calculator

  1. 1Enter each assignment score and its corresponding weight on a separate line using the format score/weight.
  2. 2Multiply each score by its weight to determine the weighted points for each item.
  3. 3Add all weighted points together and divide by the sum of all entered weights.
  4. 4Review the resulting weighted percentage (rounded to two decimal places) and the corresponding letter grade.

Reading your result

The 'Weighted grade' represents your overall percentage based on the proportions you provided. The 'Letter' output maps that percentage directly to a traditional ten-point academic grading scale without plus or minus modifiers.

Limitations

The calculator does not support plus/minus letter grades (such as B+ or A-) or custom grade boundary thresholds. It also does not automatically drop lowest scores, handle extra credit caps, or validate that the total sum of weights equals 100.

Common questions

Do my weights have to add up to 100?+

No. The formula divides by the sum of all entered weights, so you can enter raw weights or partial weights (such as 30, 30, and 40, or 3, 3, and 4) and achieve the correct weighted average.

Can I use percentages or decimals for the scores?+

Yes. Scores can be whole numbers or decimals (e.g., 88.5/20). Make sure to enter the score as the number earned, not as a fraction.

What happens if a line has a weight of zero?+

Any line with a weight of zero or invalid numerical format is ignored in the sum to prevent division by zero errors.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
