About the Fuel Cost Calculator

This calculator estimates the total volume of fuel and the financial cost required for a specific vehicle trip. It is designed for drivers, commuters, and road-trippers planning travel budgets or comparing travel options.

Distance
The total planned driving distance for the trip, measured in miles (typically 1 to 5,000 miles).
Fuel efficiency
The average fuel economy of the vehicle, measured in miles per gallon (mpg), typically ranging from 10 to 60 mpg.
Fuel price
The price per gallon of fuel in dollars ($/gal), commonly between $2.00 and $6.00.

Formula and method

Fuel Needed = Distance / Fuel Efficiency
Trip Cost = Fuel Needed × Fuel Price
  • DistanceTotal one-way or round-trip road distance in miles
  • Fuel EfficiencyVehicle fuel economy in miles per gallon (mpg)
  • Fuel PriceRetail cost of gasoline or diesel in dollars per gallon ($/gal)
  • Fuel NeededTotal gallons of fuel consumed
  • Trip CostTotal monetary expense for the fuel used

The tool divides trip distance by vehicle fuel efficiency to find total gallons required, rounding this value to two decimal places. It then multiplies the required fuel by the price per gallon to compute the final monetary cost, formatted as standard currency.

How to use the Fuel Cost Calculator

  1. 1Enter the total distance of your intended trip in miles.
  2. 2Enter your vehicle's expected fuel efficiency in miles per gallon.
  3. 3Enter the anticipated or current price per gallon of fuel.
  4. 4Review the resulting estimated fuel needed in gallons and the total projected trip cost.

Reading your result

The 'Fuel needed' result indicates the exact volume of fuel your vehicle is projected to burn over the route. The 'Cost' output shows the projected out-of-pocket expense for fuel at that specific price point, helping you budget for fill-ups or split expenses with passengers.

Limitations

The calculation assumes a constant average fuel efficiency throughout the trip, ignoring variations from city traffic, elevation changes, driving speed, cargo weight, or idle time. It also does not factor in toll charges, vehicle wear and tear, or regional price differences across multiple gas stations.

Common questions

Should I use my car's city or highway MPG rating?+

Use your vehicle's highway rating for long interstate road trips, city rating for stop-and-go driving, or a combined rating if your route includes both.

How can I calculate a round trip?+

Double your one-way distance before entering it into the 'Distance' field to compute the total round-trip fuel and cost.

Does running the air conditioner affect this estimate?+

Yes. Air conditioning and high driving speeds lower your actual fuel efficiency, which means your effective MPG will be lower than standard EPA ratings.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
