About the Recipe Scaling Calculator
The Recipe Scaling Calculator adjusts an ingredient's weight in grams when you change a recipe's serving count. Enter the original ingredient quantity, original servings, and desired servings to find the new quantity while keeping the ingredient amount per serving unchanged. With 250 g for 4 servings scaled to 6 servings, the result is 375 g.
- Original ingredient quantity (g)
- The ingredient weight used in the original recipe, measured in grams, with a default of 250 g.
- Original servings
- The number of servings the original ingredient quantity supports, expressed as a serving count, with a default of 4.
- Desired servings
- The number of servings you want the adjusted recipe to produce, expressed as a serving count, with a default of 6.
Formula and method
Q_new = Q_original × (S_desired / S_original) = 250 g × (6 / 4) = 375 g
- Q_newScaled ingredient quantity in grams.
- Q_originalOriginal ingredient quantity in grams.
- S_desiredDesired number of servings.
- S_originalOriginal number of servings.
Divide the desired servings by the original servings to obtain the scaling factor, then multiply the original ingredient quantity by that factor. For the default inputs, 6 / 4 gives a factor of 1.5, and 250 g × 1.5 gives 375 g.

How to use the Recipe Scaling Calculator
- 1Enter 250 in Original ingredient quantity (g) for the worked example, or enter the ingredient's original weight in grams.
- 2Enter 4 in Original servings for the worked example, or enter the recipe's original serving count.
- 3Enter 6 in Desired servings for the worked example, or enter your target serving count.
- 4Read the calculated result: the default inputs produce a scaled ingredient quantity of 375 g.
- 5Repeat for each ingredient, keeping the same original and desired serving counts to preserve the recipe's proportions.
Reading your result
The Result row shows the total ingredient weight needed for the desired serving count, in grams—not the weight per serving or the extra amount to add. A result of 375 g means you should use 375 g of that ingredient in total for 6 servings.
Limitations
The calculation assumes equal portion sizes and a directly proportional relationship between ingredient weight and serving count. Original servings must be greater than zero; ingredient quantities and desired servings should not be negative. The tool scales one ingredient at a time and does not convert grams to cups or other volume units. Seasonings and leavening agents may need recipe-specific adjustments, especially for large batch changes. Cooking time, temperature, and pan size do not necessarily scale by the same factor, and practical weighing may require rounding.
Common questions
Why does scaling 250 g from 4 servings to 6 servings give 375 g?+
The desired serving count is 1.5 times the original count, so the ingredient weight is also multiplied by 1.5: 250 g × 1.5 = 375 g.
Is 375 g the total quantity or the amount to add?+
It is the total quantity for the scaled recipe. If you have already measured the original 250 g, add 125 g to reach 375 g.
Can I scale an entire recipe with this calculator?+
Yes, by calculating each ingredient separately. Keep Original servings and Desired servings unchanged between ingredients, and enter each ingredient's original weight in grams.
Can I enter an ingredient measured in cups or teaspoons?+
Convert that ingredient's volume to grams before entering it. The conversion depends on the ingredient and how it is measured; this calculator does not perform volume-to-weight conversions.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
