Handicap index from score differentials (score/rating/slope per line).
About the Golf Handicap Calculator
This calculator determines a golf handicap index from your entered rounds using course ratings and slope ratings. It is designed for golfers looking to gauge their playing ability based on recent score differentials. By factoring in course difficulty, it provides a portable metric of your potential scoring ability.
- Rounds
- One round per line in the format score/course rating/slope rating (for example, 88/72.1/128). Scores typically range from 60 to 140, course ratings near par (67 to 77), and slopes from 55 to 155.
Formula and method
Differential = (Score − Course Rating) × 113 / Slope Rating Handicap Index = (Sum of lowest k Differentials / k) × 0.96
- ScoreGross score recorded for the round
- Course RatingEvaluation of playing difficulty for a scratch golfer under normal conditions
- Slope RatingRelative difficulty of a course for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer (standard base is 113)
- kNumber of lowest differentials used, calculated as round(Total Rounds × 0.4), with a minimum of 1
The tool parses each line, converts it into a scoring differential adjusted to the standard slope of 113, and sorts the differentials from lowest to highest. It selects the best 40% of rounds (rounded to the nearest whole number, at least 1 round), calculates their arithmetic mean, and multiplies the result by the 0.96 bonus-for-excellence multiplier. The final handicap index is rounded to one decimal place.

How to use the Golf Handicap Calculator
- 1Enter each completed round on a new line using the format score/rating/slope.
- 2Calculate the differential for every valid line using (Score − Rating) × 113 / Slope.
- 3Sort the differentials from lowest to highest and select the best 40% (at least one round).
- 4Average the selected differentials, multiply by 0.96, and round to one decimal place.
Reading your result
A lower handicap index indicates a more skilled golfer, representing how many strokes over the course rating a player is expected to shoot on a course of standard difficulty. The 'Rounds used' count shows how many of your lowest differentials were factored into the average. For instance, an index of 12.2 means you typically play roughly 12 strokes over the scratch rating on a standard course.
Limitations
This calculator implements the traditional 0.96 multiplier and a simple 40% round-selection ratio rather than the exact World Handicap System (WHS) tiered lookup tables. It does not factor in 9-hole combinations, Playing Conditions Calculations (PCC), maximum score caps per hole (Net Double Bogey), or soft/hard caps relative to a low historical index.
Common questions
Why is the score differential multiplied by 113?+
A slope rating of 113 represents a course of standard difficulty under the USGA Course Rating System. Multiplying by 113 and dividing by the actual slope normalizes your differential across courses of varying difficulty.
Why does the formula multiply the average by 0.96?+
The 0.96 factor was historically called the 'bonus for excellence' in the USGA handicap system. It retains an incentive for improvement by slightly lowering the handicap relative to raw average scoring potential.
What happens if I only enter one or two rounds?+
The calculator requires at least one valid round. Because the round selection uses a minimum of 1 round (Math.max(1, round(count × 0.4))), entering 1, 2, or 3 rounds will use your single lowest differential multiplied by 0.96.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
