About the Warranty Expiration Calculator

The Warranty Expiration Calculator adds a warranty term in calendar months to a purchase date to find the calculated expiration date. It preserves the purchase day when possible and clamps it to the last day of the target month when necessary. With a purchase date of 2026-01-31 and a warranty term of 12 months, the result is 2027-01-31.

Purchase date
The calendar date from which the warranty term is counted, entered in YYYY-MM-DD format; the default is 2026-01-31.
Warranty months
The warranty duration in whole calendar months to add to the purchase date; the default is 12.

Formula and method

T = 12Y + (M − 1) + W; Y′ = floor(T / 12); M′ = (T mod 12) + 1; D′ = min(D, L(Y′, M′)); E = date(Y′, M′, D′). For 2026-01-31 plus 12 months, the target month is January 2027 and D′ = min(31, 31) = 31, so E = 2027-01-31.
  • Y, M, DThe purchase date's year, month numbered 1 through 12, and day of the month.
  • WThe warranty duration in whole calendar months.
  • TThe target month's index, calculated using a zero-based month within each year.
  • Y′, M′, D′The calculated expiration year, month, and day.
  • L(Y′, M′)The number of days in the target month, accounting for leap years.
  • EThe calculated warranty expiration date.
  • floor, mod, minRespectively, round down to an integer, take the division remainder, and select the smaller value.

Add the full warranty duration to the purchase year and month in a single calendar-month shift. Determine the number of days in that target month, then use the original purchase day or the target month's last day, whichever is earlier. Format the resulting date as YYYY-MM-DD; do not convert the warranty months into a fixed number of days.

How to use the Warranty Expiration Calculator

  1. 1Enter the purchase date in YYYY-MM-DD format; the default is 2026-01-31.
  2. 2Enter the warranty duration in whole months; the default is 12.
  3. 3Calculate the target year and month by adding the warranty months to the purchase date's year and month.
  4. 4Keep the purchase day if it exists in the target month; otherwise, use that month's last day.
  5. 5Read the Date output: with the default inputs, Date = 2027-01-31.

Reading your result

The Date row shows the calculated expiration date in YYYY-MM-DD format. For the default inputs, Date = 2027-01-31 means the calendar date 12 months after 2026-01-31 is January 31, 2027. No clamping is needed because that target month has a 31st day.

Limitations

This calculation assumes a valid Gregorian calendar purchase date and a nonnegative whole-month warranty term beginning on that date. It does not account for activation or delivery dates, warranty extensions, replacement policies, business-day adjustments, or contract-specific counting rules. It returns a date, not an expiration time or time zone, and does not establish whether coverage includes the displayed date; consult the warranty terms for the actual coverage cutoff.

Common questions

What happens if the target month does not have the purchase day?+

The calculator uses the last valid day of the target month rather than rolling the extra days into the following month. February's last day is determined using the target year's leap-year status.

Why does the default purchase date of 2026-01-31 produce 2027-01-31?+

Adding 12 calendar months reaches January 2027. January has 31 days, so the original day remains valid and the result is 2027-01-31.

Does the calculator clamp the date after every month of the warranty?+

No. It shifts directly to the final target month and clamps only there. Shorter intervening months do not change the original purchase day used for the final calculation.

Am I guaranteed warranty coverage through the displayed Date?+

No. The Date is the result of calendar-month arithmetic, not a determination of coverage. Your warranty may specify a different start event, an exact cutoff time, or whether the expiration date is included.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
