Weekly hours and pay from daily shifts (start-end per line).
About the Time Card Calculator
This time card calculator determines total weekly work hours, standard overtime hours, and gross pay from a list of daily shifts. It automatically subtracts unpaid daily break times and handles shifts that cross midnight. Hourly workers, freelancers, and small business managers can use it to verify weekly timesheets and estimate gross earnings.
- Shifts (HH:MM-HH:MM)
- A list of daily shifts entered one per line in 24-hour time format, with start and end times separated by a hyphen (e.g., 09:00-17:00).
- Break per day
- Unpaid break duration subtracted from each recorded shift, specified in minutes (typically 0 to 60 minutes).
- Hourly rate
- Standard hourly wage before deductions, expressed in dollars per hour.
Formula and method
Shift Minutes = (End Time − Start Time) + (1440 if End Time < Start Time) − Break Total Hours = Sum(Shift Minutes) / 60 Regular Hours = min(Total Hours, 40) Overtime Hours = max(0, Total Hours − 40) Total Pay = (Regular Hours × Rate) + (Overtime Hours × Rate × 1.5)
- Shift MinutesNet paid minutes worked during an individual shift after subtracting break time
- 1440Total minutes in a 24-hour day, added when a shift ends after midnight
- RateBase hourly pay rate
- Regular HoursTotal hours worked up to the 40-hour weekly threshold
- Overtime HoursWeekly hours worked beyond the standard 40-hour threshold, paid at 1.5× base rate
Each shift line is parsed into start and end times in minutes from midnight, adjusting by 1,440 minutes if the shift ends on the next calendar day. The specified break time is deducted from each shift, and the remaining minutes are summed and converted into decimal hours. Hours up to 40 are billed at the standard rate, while hours exceeding 40 are multiplied by 1.5 times the hourly rate.

How to use the Time Card Calculator
- 1Enter each shift on a new line using HH:MM-HH:MM 24-hour format.
- 2Specify the unpaid daily break length in minutes and enter your standard hourly wage.
- 3The tool calculates the net duration for each shift and aggregates weekly total hours.
- 4Review total hours, overtime hours past 40, and the resulting gross pay.
Reading your result
The total hours figure shows your combined net working time across all listed shifts. Overtime hours reflects only time exceeding the 40-hour weekly baseline. The calculated pay represents gross earnings before taxes, benefits, or other payroll withholdings.
Limitations
The calculation assumes a uniform break length applied to every shift line and does not support varying break times per day. Overtime is computed strictly on a weekly basis exceeding 40 hours; it does not calculate daily overtime rules (such as hours over 8 per day in certain jurisdictions) or double-time rates.
Common questions
How do I enter shifts that cross midnight?+
Enter the 24-hour start and end times normally (for example, 22:00-06:00). The calculator detects that the end time is numerically earlier than the start time and automatically adds 24 hours (1,440 minutes) to compute the overnight span.
Can I enter multiple breaks for a single shift?+
No, the tool applies a single uniform break duration in minutes to each shift line. If you took multiple breaks, add their total minutes together and enter the combined total.
Does this calculator account for daily overtime rules?+
No. It uses the standard weekly 40-hour overtime rule, paying 1.5 times your rate for any total weekly hours beyond 40 regardless of how many hours were worked on any single day.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
