About the Age Calculator

The Age Calculator computes the exact chronological time elapsed between a date of birth and a specified target date. It breaks down the interval into calendar years, months, and days, while also converting the duration into total months, weeks, days, and hours. It is commonly used for filling out official paperwork, verifying milestone eligibility, or tracking developmental stages.

Date of birth
The starting calendar date (YYYY-MM-DD), representing when a person was born.
Age at date
The ending reference date (YYYY-MM-DD) for which the age is calculated, defaulting to the current or a chosen future/past date.

Formula and method

Age = Y_diff years, M_diff months, D_diff days; Total Days = (Date_target − Date_birth) / 86,400,000 ms; Total Months = (Y_diff × 12) + M_diff; Total Weeks = floor(Total Days / 7); Total Hours = Total Days × 24
  • Date_birthThe starting birth date timestamp
  • Date_targetThe target evaluation date timestamp
  • Y_diffCompleted calendar years between dates after day and month borrowing
  • M_diffCompleted calendar months remaining after full years
  • D_diffCompleted calendar days remaining after full months
  • Total DaysAbsolute number of 24-hour calendar days elapsed between the two dates

The calculation determines completed calendar units by subtracting the birth year, month, and day from the target date, borrowing days from the preceding month and months from the preceding year when the end day or month is smaller than the start. Total days are derived directly from the millisecond difference across calendar dates, with weeks, months, and hours computed from the total day count and full month intervals.

Inputs

  • Date of birth1990-06-15
  • Age at date1970-01-01

Results

  • Age-21 years 6 months 17 days
  • Total months-246
  • Total weeks-1,067
  • Total days-7,470
  • Total hours-179,280

How to use the Age Calculator

  1. 1Subtract the birth day, month, and year from the target date, adjusting for varying month lengths and leap years via calendar borrowing.
  2. 2Express the primary result as completed full years, remaining full months, and remaining days.
  3. 3Calculate the absolute elapsed span in days by finding the timestamp difference divided by 86,400,000 milliseconds.
  4. 4Compute total whole months, total integer weeks (days divided by 7), and total hours (days multiplied by 24).

Reading your result

The primary 'Age' result gives the conventional calendar age in completed years, months, and days. The secondary metrics show the same elapsed duration converted entirely into single units, allowing you to see the exact total days lived, full weeks passed, or total elapsed hours.

Limitations

The calculation treats dates as midnight-to-midnight spans and does not account for specific times of birth, time zones, or daylight saving time shifts. In addition, total months reflect completed calendar month boundaries rather than an average month length.

Common questions

How is age counted for someone born on February 29?+

Leap years are naturally accounted for in both the day-to-day millisecond interval and when borrowing days from February (which yields 29 days in a leap year and 28 days in a standard year).

Why is total months not just total days divided by 30?+

Calendar months vary between 28 and 31 days. The calculator counts true elapsed calendar months (years multiplied by 12 plus remaining full months) rather than using a fixed 30-day approximation.

Can I calculate age at a past date instead of today?+

Yes. Set 'Age at date' to any date after the date of birth to see how old a person was on that specific historical date.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
