About the Speaking Time Calculator
The Speaking Time Calculator estimates how long it will take to say a passage aloud based on its word count and your speaking speed. Enter your text and words per minute to get an estimated duration in minutes for a speech, presentation, or voiceover.
- Text
- The passage you plan to speak, entered as text and measured by its word count.
- Words per minute
- Your assumed speaking speed in words per minute, with a default of 130.
Formula and method
T = W / R; with the default inputs, T = 6 / 130 = 0.046154 minutes (rounded to six decimal places).
- TEstimated speaking duration in minutes.
- WNumber of words in the entered text.
- RSpeaking speed in words per minute.
Count the words in the entered text, then divide that count by the words-per-minute value. The default text, "Hello world. This is a sample.", contains 6 words. Dividing 6 by the default rate of 130 gives the displayed result of 0.046154 minutes.

How to use the Speaking Time Calculator
- 1Enter or paste the passage you intend to speak into Text.
- 2Set Words per minute to your expected delivery speed, or keep the default of 130.
- 3Check that the text includes only words you intend to say and that the speaking rate is greater than zero.
- 4Read the calculated Result in minutes; the default inputs produce 0.046154 minutes.
- 5Adjust the text or speaking rate to explore how edits or delivery speed change the estimate.
Reading your result
The Result row shows the estimated total speaking duration in decimal minutes, not minutes-and-seconds notation. With "Hello world. This is a sample." and 130 words per minute, Result = 0.046154 minutes. A longer passage increases the estimate at the same rate, while a higher speaking rate reduces it for the same text.
Limitations
The estimate assumes a constant speaking rate and does not separately model pauses, emphasis, audience reactions, or time spent explaining visuals. Punctuation does not add a separate pause allowance. Word-count conventions for hyphenated terms, symbols, and languages without spaces may affect accuracy. The speaking rate must be greater than zero, and actual delivery should be checked with a timed rehearsal.
Common questions
Why does the default text produce 0.046154 minutes?+
"Hello world. This is a sample." has 6 words. At 130 words per minute, its estimated duration is 6 divided by 130, rounded to six decimal places.
Do periods and commas add speaking time?+
They do not add time separately in the word-count-divided-by-rate formula. Use a speaking rate that reflects your pauses, or account for planned pauses outside this estimate.
How should I choose words per minute for my own voice?+
Read a representative passage aloud at your intended pace, time it in minutes, and divide its word count by that duration. Enter the resulting rate to tailor the estimate to your delivery.
Should I include stage directions and slide notes in Text?+
Include only content you will say aloud. Unspoken stage directions and slide notes can inflate the word count without representing actual spoken content.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
