About the Line Counter

The Line Counter counts logical lines in your text, including an empty line after a trailing line break. It counts explicit line breaks rather than the rows created when text wraps on screen. The default text, “Hello world. This is a sample.”, produces “Result = 1 lines”.

Text
The text to inspect for logical line boundaries, entered as characters with no physical units.

Formula and method

L = B + 1, where B is the number of recognized line breaks; for “Hello world. This is a sample.”, B = 0, so L = 0 + 1 = 1 lines.
  • LTotal number of logical lines, including a trailing empty line.
  • BNumber of recognized line-break sequences in the input text.

Read the text and count its recognized line-break sequences. Each break ends one logical line and starts another, so add one to the break count. Preserve empty segments between consecutive breaks and after a final break. The default text contains no line breaks, so its result is one logical line.

How to use the Line Counter

  1. 1Enter or paste your content into the Text input.
  2. 2Keep any blank lines and trailing line break that you want included in the count.
  3. 3Check that apparent extra rows are actual line breaks, not just text wrapping in the input box.
  4. 4Read the Result value as the total number of logical lines.
  5. 5For the default text, “Hello world. This is a sample.”, confirm that the display reads “Result = 1 lines”.

Reading your result

The Result row reports the total logical line count in lines. “Result = 1 lines” means the default text occupies one logical line, even though it contains multiple sentences. Empty lines count, including the empty line created when the text ends with a recognized line break.

Limitations

This is a logical-line count, not a count of printed rows or visually wrapped rows. Under the stated formula, an empty string is one empty logical line. The exact supported newline encodings are not specified; a Windows CRLF pair should be treated as one line-break sequence rather than two separate breaks. Recognition of lone carriage returns or Unicode line separators depends on the implementation. Pasting or editing text may alter line endings before counting.

Common questions

Why does the default text count as one line despite having multiple sentences?+

“Hello world. This is a sample.” contains sentence-ending punctuation but no line breaks. Periods and spaces do not create logical lines, so the result is “Result = 1 lines”.

Does a line break at the very end increase the count?+

Yes. A final recognized line break starts an empty logical line, and this calculator includes that trailing empty line.

Do blank lines between paragraphs count?+

Yes. Empty segments between consecutive line breaks are logical lines and remain part of the total.

Will resizing the text box change the line count?+

No. Resizing can change visual wrapping, but it does not add or remove explicit line breaks in the text.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
