About the Reading Time Calculator

The Reading Time Calculator estimates how many minutes it takes to read supplied text at a chosen pace in words per minute. Enter your text and reading speed to get a duration based on word count rather than character count.

Text
The passage to estimate, entered as text and measured in words, defaults to "Hello world. This is a sample.".
Words per minute
Your assumed reading speed, measured in words per minute, defaults to 250.

Formula and method

T = W / R; with the default inputs, T = 6 / 250 = 0.024 minutes.
  • TEstimated reading duration in minutes.
  • WNumber of words in the supplied text.
  • RReading speed in words per minute; this must be greater than zero.

Count the words in the supplied text, then divide that count by the entered words-per-minute rate. The default text, "Hello world. This is a sample.", contains six words. Dividing six by the default rate of 250 words per minute gives a result of 0.024 minutes.

How to use the Reading Time Calculator

  1. 1Enter or paste the passage into Text, or keep the default passage, "Hello world. This is a sample.".
  2. 2Enter a positive reading speed in Words per minute, or keep the default value of 250.
  3. 3Run the calculation to divide the text's word count by your selected reading speed.
  4. 4Read the Result as an estimated duration in minutes; the default inputs produce 0.024 minutes.

Reading your result

The Result row shows estimated reading time in decimal minutes. For the default inputs, Result = 0.024 minutes. This is a fraction of a minute, not a minutes-and-seconds notation; multiply a value in minutes by 60 if you need seconds.

Limitations

The estimate assumes a constant reading speed throughout the text. It does not account for pauses, rereading, comprehension difficulty, images, or formatting. The default rate of 250 words per minute is an assumption, not a measurement of your reading ability. Word counts can vary with how software handles hyphens, symbols, and languages without spaces, so unusual text may produce less reliable estimates.

Common questions

Why does the default passage return 0.024 minutes?+

"Hello world. This is a sample." contains six words. The calculator divides six words by 250 words per minute, giving 0.024 minutes.

Does punctuation add to the reading time?+

Punctuation attached to words, such as the periods in the default passage, does not add words to that passage's count. The formula also does not add separate time for pauses at punctuation.

Can I use this calculator to estimate reading aloud?+

Yes, if you enter your reading-aloud pace in Words per minute. The estimate still excludes any additional pauses for emphasis, audience interaction, or delivery.

How should I choose the words-per-minute value?+

Time yourself reading a representative passage, then divide its word count by the elapsed time in minutes. Enter that rate to make the estimate more representative of your pace for similar material.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
