About the Installment Finance Charge Calculator
The Installment Finance Charge Calculator finds the dollar cost of financing by comparing equal scheduled payments with the amount financed, then adding a separate upfront finance fee. It reports the scheduled payment total and the finance charge including that fee. With the default inputs, the scheduled payments total $5,760.00 and the finance charge including the upfront fee is $860.00.
- Amount financed ($)
- The principal amount financed, in dollars, is the amount subtracted from the scheduled payment total and defaults to $5,000.
- Payment ($)
- The amount of each equal scheduled installment, in dollars, defaults to $240.
- Number of payments (payments)
- The total count of equal scheduled installments, in payments, defaults to 24.
- Additional upfront finance fee ($)
- A separate finance fee paid upfront and not already included in the scheduled payments, in dollars, defaults to $100.
Formula and method
T = P × N; C = T − A + F = (P × N) − A + F.
- TScheduled payment total, in dollars.
- PAmount of each equal scheduled payment, in dollars.
- NNumber of scheduled payments.
- AAmount financed, in dollars.
- FAdditional upfront finance fee, in dollars.
- CFinance charge including the upfront fee, in dollars.
Multiply the payment by the number of payments to obtain the scheduled payment total. Subtract the amount financed, then add the separate upfront finance fee. Using the defaults: $240 × 24 = $5,760.00, and $5,760.00 − $5,000.00 + $100.00 = $860.00.

Reading your result
Scheduled payment total is the sum of all entered installments: $5,760.00 with the defaults. This row excludes the separate upfront fee. Finance charge including upfront fee is the amount by which scheduled payments exceed the amount financed, plus that fee: $860.00 with the defaults. It is a dollar cost, not an interest rate or APR.
Limitations
The calculation assumes all installments are equal and the entered payment count covers the full repayment schedule. It does not model payment dates, interest accrual, variable payments, balloon payments, early payoff, late fees, or other costs unless reflected in the inputs. Add an upfront fee only if it is separate from the scheduled payments and has not already been accounted for through a reduction in the amount financed. This arithmetic estimate may differ from a legally disclosed finance charge because disclosure rules determine which costs are included. A negative result means the entered scheduled payments plus fee are less than the amount financed and should prompt a review of the inputs.
Common questions
Why is the default finance charge $860.00 rather than $760.00?+
The 24 payments of $240 total $5,760.00, which exceeds the $5,000 amount financed by $760.00. Adding the separate $100 upfront finance fee produces the $860.00 finance charge.
Should I enter a fee here if it is already built into my installments?+
No. The additional upfront finance fee input is for a separate charge not already captured by the payment total or by an adjustment to the amount financed. Entering an already-counted fee would overstate the finance charge.
Does the number of payments have to mean months?+
No. It is the count of installments, whether weekly, monthly, or on another schedule. Payment frequency does not change this total-cost calculation, but it would matter when calculating APR.
Can this calculator handle a different final payment or a balloon payment?+
Not directly. It multiplies one payment amount by the payment count, so it assumes every installment is equal. For an unequal schedule, sum the actual payments separately, subtract the amount financed, and add any separate upfront finance fee without double-counting it.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
