About the Pawn Loan Redemption Cost Calculator
The Pawn Loan Redemption Cost Calculator estimates the amount needed to reclaim a pawned item using the loan amount, a monthly simple interest rate, the term in months, and a fixed fee. It separates the finance cost from the total redemption amount so you can see how much you pay beyond the money borrowed. With the default inputs, the finance cost is $75.00 and the redemption amount is $375.00.
- Loan amount ($)
- The principal borrowed against the pawned item, in dollars, with a default of $300.
- Monthly simple interest (%)
- The percentage of the original loan amount charged as interest each month, with a default of 10%.
- Term (months)
- The period over which simple interest is calculated, measured in months, with a default of 2 months.
- Fixed fee ($)
- The single fee added to the estimated borrowing cost, in dollars, with a default of $15.
Formula and method
I = P × (r / 100) × t; C = I + F; R = P + C. With the default inputs: I = 300 × (10 / 100) × 2 = $60.00; C = 60 + 15 = $75.00; R = 300 + 75 = $375.00.
- PLoan principal in dollars.
- rMonthly simple interest rate entered as a percentage.
- tLoan term in months.
- FFixed fee in dollars, added once.
- ITotal simple interest in dollars.
- CFinance cost in dollars: interest plus the fixed fee.
- RRedemption amount in dollars: principal plus finance cost.
Convert the monthly interest percentage to a decimal, then multiply it by the original loan amount and the term in months. Add the fixed fee once to obtain the finance cost, then add the loan principal to obtain the redemption amount. Interest is not compounded, and the fixed fee does not accrue interest.

How to use the Pawn Loan Redemption Cost Calculator
- 1Enter the loan amount shown on your pawn ticket; the default is $300.
- 2Enter the monthly simple interest percentage, not an annual rate; the default is 10%.
- 3Enter the term in months over which interest will be charged; the default is 2 months.
- 4Enter the fixed fee to include once in the estimate; the default is $15.
- 5Review the finance cost and redemption amount, then compare the estimate with the pawnshop's quoted payoff and your pawn ticket.
Reading your result
Finance cost is the estimated charge above the principal: $60.00 of interest plus the $15.00 fixed fee equals $75.00 with the default inputs. Redemption amount is the estimated total needed to repay the loan and reclaim the item: the $300.00 principal plus the $75.00 finance cost equals $375.00. The finance cost is already included in the redemption amount; do not add it again.
Limitations
This estimate assumes the full principal remains outstanding throughout the term, a constant monthly simple interest rate, and one fixed fee. It excludes compounding, partial repayments, recurring fees, late charges, renewal charges, and any other charges not entered. The formula scales interest directly with the entered term, but actual contracts may charge for full months or apply minimum charges rather than prorating. It does not calculate APR, determine legal fee limits, or establish your redemption deadline or rights. Confirm the actual payoff amount and deadline with the pawnshop.
Common questions
Why is the default finance cost $75.00 rather than $60.00?+
The $300 principal at 10% monthly simple interest for 2 months produces $60.00 in interest. Adding the $15 fixed fee makes the finance cost $75.00.
Does the calculator charge interest on interest or on the fixed fee?+
No. Interest is calculated only on the original loan principal. The fixed fee is added once after interest is calculated.
Can I enter the APR from my pawn ticket as the monthly interest rate?+
No. This input requires the monthly simple interest percentage. APR is an annualized measure that may include fees, so entering it directly would misstate the redemption estimate; ask the pawnshop for the applicable monthly rate.
Will paying the displayed redemption amount always let me reclaim my item?+
Not necessarily. The displayed amount is an estimate under this tool's assumptions, not a binding payoff quote. Additional contract charges or an expired redemption deadline may affect redemption, so verify both the amount due and the deadline with the pawnshop.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
