About the Credit Utilization Calculator

The Credit Utilization Calculator measures how much of your combined revolving credit limits your card balances currently use. It also estimates the payment needed to bring that combined utilization down to your chosen target percentage. With balances of $4,500, limits of $15,000, and a 20% target, current utilization is 30% and the payment to target is $1,500.00.

Combined card balances ($)
The total outstanding balance across the credit cards you include, expressed in dollars.
Combined credit limits ($)
The sum of the credit limits for those same cards, expressed in dollars.
Target utilization (%)
The percentage of your combined credit limits you want your remaining balances to use after payment.

Formula and method

U = (B / L) × 100; A = L × (T / 100); P = max(0, B − A). With the default inputs: U = (4500 / 15000) × 100 = 30%; A = 15000 × (20 / 100) = $3,000.00; P = max(0, 4500 − 3000) = $1,500.00.
  • BCombined card balances in dollars.
  • LCombined credit limits in dollars; must be greater than zero.
  • TTarget utilization expressed as a percentage, such as 20 for 20%.
  • UCurrent combined credit utilization as a percentage.
  • ACombined balance in dollars that corresponds to the target utilization.
  • PPayment in dollars needed to reach the target, with a minimum of zero.

Divide combined balances by combined credit limits and multiply by 100 to calculate current utilization. Convert the target percentage to a decimal and multiply it by the combined limits to find the target balance. Subtract that target balance from the current balance to find the required payment; if the result is negative, report zero because utilization is already below the target.

How to use the Credit Utilization Calculator

  1. 1Add the balances for the cards you want to include and enter the total in Combined card balances ($); the default is 4500.
  2. 2Add the credit limits for those same cards and enter the total in Combined credit limits ($); the default is 15000.
  3. 3Enter your desired Target utilization (%); the default is 20.
  4. 4Read Current utilization to see the share of your combined limits currently used; the default inputs produce 30%.
  5. 5Read Payment to target to see the estimated balance reduction needed; the default inputs produce $1,500.00.

Reading your result

Current utilization shows your total included balances as a percentage of your total included limits. The default result of 30% means $4,500 of $15,000 in available credit limits is being used. Payment to target shows the total payment needed to reach or fall below your selected target, assuming nothing else changes. The default payment of $1,500.00 reduces the combined balance to $3,000.00, which is 20% of $15,000. A zero payment result means your current utilization is already at or below the target; it does not mean no minimum payment is due.

Limitations

This is a combined revolving-credit estimate, not a credit-score prediction or a payment allocation plan. It assumes payments reduce balances dollar for dollar and that no interest, fees, new charges, or credit-limit changes occur. Credit reports may show different balances depending on when issuers report, so a payment may not immediately change reported utilization. Individual-card utilization can also matter even when combined utilization is low. Use nonnegative balances, positive combined limits, and a target between 0% and 100%; current utilization can exceed 100% if balances exceed limits. Displayed amounts may be rounded. The target is a planning choice, not a guaranteed credit-score threshold, and minimum payments remain due under each card's terms.

Common questions

Why does a 20% target require a $1,500.00 payment with the default inputs?+

Twenty percent of the $15,000 combined limit is $3,000.00. Subtracting that target balance from the current $4,500 balance gives a required payment of $1,500.00.

Does this calculator show which card I should pay first?+

No. It uses combined balances and limits, so it calculates only the total balance reduction needed. You would need each card's balance, limit, interest rate, and minimum payment to evaluate payment allocation.

Will paying the displayed amount immediately lower my reported utilization?+

Not necessarily. The payment must post, and the issuer must report the updated balance before it appears on your credit report. New charges, interest, or fees can also change the balance before reporting.

Should I include a mortgage or installment loan in these totals?+

No. These inputs are for credit card revolving balances and their corresponding credit limits. Including installment-loan balances would not measure the card utilization this calculator is designed to show.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
