About the Balance Transfer Promotion Calculator
The Balance Transfer Promotion Calculator estimates the monthly payment needed to pay off a transferred credit card balance and its transfer fee before a zero-interest promotion ends. It spreads the total balance evenly across the promotional months, helping you plan payments that avoid carrying the transfer into the post-promotion period.
- Transferred balance ($)
- The amount of debt moved to the promotional offer, in dollars, excluding the transfer fee; the default is $6,000.
- Transfer fee (%)
- The fee charged as a percentage of the transferred balance; the default is 3%.
- Promotion length (months)
- The number of monthly payments available during the zero-interest promotion, in months; the default is 18.
Formula and method
F = B × (r / 100); T = B + F; P = T / n. With the default inputs: F = $6,000 × (3 / 100) = $180.00; T = $6,000 + $180.00 = $6,180.00; P = $6,180.00 / 18 ≈ $343.33 per month.
- BTransferred balance in dollars, before the transfer fee.
- rTransfer fee percentage entered as a number, such as 3 for 3%.
- FCalculated transfer fee in dollars.
- TTotal balance in dollars, including the transfer fee.
- nNumber of monthly payments during the promotion; must be greater than zero.
- PMonthly payment in dollars needed to clear the total balance, before display rounding.
Multiply the transferred balance by the transfer fee percentage divided by 100. Add that fee to the transferred balance, then divide the total by the promotion length in months. No interest is added because the calculation assumes a 0% rate throughout the promotion. Dollar outputs are displayed to two decimal places.

Reading your result
Transfer fee is the upfront cost of moving the debt: $180.00 with the default inputs. Balance including fee is the total amount to repay during the promotion: $6,180.00. Monthly payment to clear promotion is that total divided across 18 months, displayed as $343.33. This is a payoff target, not the card issuer's minimum payment. Because the displayed payment is rounded, paying exactly $343.33 for all 18 months leaves $0.06 unpaid; adjust the final payment to clear the balance.
Limitations
The calculation assumes the transfer fee is added to the balance and receives the same 0% promotional rate as the transferred debt. It does not model minimum or capped transfer fees, annual fees, new purchases, missed payments, changes to promotional eligibility, or interest after the promotion. It also assumes equal monthly payment opportunities; the actual expiration date and billing schedule may leave fewer payments than the advertised number of months. Payment allocation rules can affect payoff if the card has other balances. Confirm the offer terms and final payoff amount with the issuer.
Common questions
Why does a zero-interest transfer still cost $180.00?+
A 0% interest promotion does not necessarily waive the transfer fee. With the default $6,000 balance and 3% fee, the fee is $180.00, making the amount to repay $6,180.00.
Will paying $343.33 every month clear the default transfer within 18 months?+
Almost, but not exactly: the displayed payment is rounded to cents. Eighteen payments of $343.33 leave $0.06, so add that amount to the final payment and confirm the account's payoff balance.
Can I use the card's minimum payment instead of the calculated promotion payoff payment?+
The minimum payment may be lower than the amount needed to clear the transfer before the promotion expires. This calculator divides the full balance including the fee across the promotional months; it does not calculate the issuer's minimum payment.
Does this calculator estimate interest if I miss the promotion deadline?+
No. It calculates only the payment target during the 0% period. Any remaining balance may incur interest at the applicable post-promotion rate under your card agreement; check that rate and the exact expiration date with the issuer.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
