About the Dynamic Viscosity Converter
The Dynamic Viscosity Converter converts dynamic viscosity values between pascal-seconds (Pa·s), poise, and centipoise. It changes the unit used to express a fluid’s resistance to shear without changing the physical viscosity. With the default settings, 1 Pa·s converts to 1,000 centipoise.
- Value
- The dynamic viscosity magnitude to convert, expressed in the selected From unit and defaulting to 1.
- From
- The input unit—Pa·s, poise, or centipoise—with Pa·s selected by default.
- To
- The output unit—centipoise, poise, or Pa·s—with centipoise selected by default.
Formula and method
y = x × (f_from / f_to), where f(Pa·s) = 1, f(poise) = 0.1, and f(centipoise) = 0.001. For the default inputs: y = 1 × (1 / 0.001) = 1,000 centipoise.
- xThe numerical viscosity value entered in the From unit.
- yThe numerical viscosity result expressed in the To unit.
- f_fromThe conversion factor in Pa·s per unit of the selected From unit.
- f_toThe conversion factor in Pa·s per unit of the selected To unit.
The converter multiplies the input value by its source-unit factor to express the viscosity in Pa·s, then divides by the target-unit factor. These unit relationships are exact: 1 Pa·s = 10 poise = 1,000 centipoise. Selecting the same source and target units leaves the value unchanged.

How to use the Dynamic Viscosity Converter
- 1Enter the dynamic viscosity in Value; keep 1 for the default example.
- 2Select the unit of the entered value in From; keep Pa·s for the default example.
- 3Select the desired output unit in To; keep centipoise for the default example.
- 4Read the converted result: the default inputs give 1,000 centipoise.
- 5Record the result with its unit and retain any temperature or measurement conditions supplied with the original viscosity.
Reading your result
The Result row shows the equivalent dynamic viscosity in the selected To unit. For the default inputs, Result = 1,000 centipoise means exactly the same viscosity as 1 Pa·s; the larger number reflects a smaller unit, not a thicker fluid.
Limitations
This tool only converts dynamic viscosity units; it does not measure viscosity or predict how viscosity changes with temperature, pressure, or shear rate. It does not convert kinematic viscosity units such as centistokes, which requires fluid density. The unit factors are exact, but the input measurement’s precision and any display rounding limit the precision of the reported result. For ordinary fluid-property use, enter a nonnegative viscosity.
Common questions
Why does 1 Pa·s become 1,000 centipoise?+
One centipoise equals 0.001 Pa·s, so the converter divides 1 Pa·s by 0.001 Pa·s per centipoise to obtain 1,000 centipoise.
How are poise and centipoise related?+
One poise equals 100 centipoise. To convert poise to centipoise, multiply by 100; to convert back, divide by 100.
Is centipoise the same as mPa·s?+
Yes. One centipoise equals one millipascal-second (mPa·s), so their numerical values match, although mPa·s is not a selectable unit in this converter.
Can this calculator convert centistokes to centipoise?+
No. Centistokes measures kinematic viscosity, while centipoise measures dynamic viscosity. Converting between them requires density at the applicable conditions, using dynamic viscosity = kinematic viscosity × density with consistent units.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
