About the Conversion Calculator
This calculator converts numerical quantities between standard metric and imperial units across length, mass, volume, and area. It is commonly used by students, engineers, cooks, and travelers who need quick, precise unit transformations. The tool verifies that both selected units share the same physical dimension before performing the conversion.
- Value
- The numerical quantity you want to convert; can be any real positive or negative number.
- From
- The starting unit of measurement selected from the supported length, weight, volume, or area units.
- To
- The target unit of measurement into which the starting value will be converted.
Formula and method
Result = Value × (Factor_from / Factor_to)
- ValueThe input quantity to be converted
- Factor_fromConversion ratio of the source unit relative to the category base unit
- Factor_toConversion ratio of the destination unit relative to the category base unit
- ResultThe resulting value expressed in the target unit
The tool checks whether the source and target units belong to the same dimensional category (length, weight, volume, or area). If they match, it normalizes the input value to a shared base unit and then divides by the target unit's conversion factor. The final figure is displayed rounded to 6 decimal places.
Worked example

Inputs
- Value1
- Frommile
- Tokilometer
Results
- Result1.609344 kilometer
How to use the Conversion Calculator
- 1Enter the numerical value you wish to convert in the Value field.
- 2Choose your starting unit from the From dropdown list.
- 3Choose your desired output unit from the To dropdown list.
- 4Read the converted value, or verify both units belong to the same dimension if prompted.
Reading your result
The result displays the converted value alongside the target unit abbreviation. If you select incompatible dimensions—such as converting kilograms into meters—the calculator returns 'Pick units of the same kind' instead of a number. For standard conversions, the value reflects the exact proportional scaling between the two units.
Limitations
The calculator only supports linear scale factors and does not handle temperature conversions (such as Celsius to Fahrenheit), which require an additive offset. It also does not convert across different physical dimensions, such as converting mass directly into volume using material density.
Common questions
Why does the calculator say 'Pick units of the same kind'?+
This appears when you attempt to convert between different physical dimensions, such as converting a length (like miles) into a weight (like kilograms).
Are fluid ounces and weight ounces the same unit?+
No. Fluid ounces measure volume (liquid capacity), whereas standard ounces measure mass or weight. Because they measure different physical quantities, they cannot be converted into one another without knowing fluid density.
How many decimal places are shown in the result?+
The calculator formats the converted number to a maximum of 6 decimal places, trimming unnecessary trailing zeros.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
