About the Energy Converter

The Energy Converter converts energy values between joules, thermochemical calories, kilowatt-hours (kWh), and International Table British thermal units, labeled BTU (IT). Select the starting and destination units to express the same energy quantity in a different unit. With the default settings, 1 joule is displayed as 0.000948 BTU (IT).

Value
The energy quantity to convert, expressed in the selected From unit and defaulting to 1.
From
The starting energy unit—joule, thermochemical calorie, kWh, or BTU (IT)—with joule selected by default.
To
The destination energy unit—BTU (IT), kWh, thermochemical calorie, or joule—with BTU (IT) selected by default.

Formula and method

E_to = E_from × (c_from / c_to), where c(joule) = 1 J/joule, c(thermochemical calorie) = 4.184 J/calorie, c(kWh) = 3,600,000 J/kWh, and c(BTU (IT)) = 1,055.05585262 J/BTU (IT). For the default inputs: E_to = 1 × (1 / 1,055.05585262) BTU (IT) ≈ 0.000948 BTU (IT).
  • E_fromThe entered energy value in the selected From unit.
  • E_toThe converted energy value in the selected To unit.
  • c_fromThe number of joules per unit of the selected From unit.
  • c_toThe number of joules per unit of the selected To unit.

The calculation uses joules as a common basis. It multiplies the input value by the source unit's joule factor, then divides by the destination unit's joule factor. No additive offset is needed. The default conversion divides 1 joule by 1,055.05585262 joules per BTU (IT), giving the displayed result of 0.000948 BTU (IT) after rounding.

How to use the Energy Converter

  1. 1Enter the energy quantity in Value; leave it at 1 to follow the default example.
  2. 2Choose the starting unit in From; the default is joule.
  3. 3Choose the destination unit in To; the default is BTU (IT).
  4. 4Read the converted result: the default inputs produce 0.000948 BTU (IT).
  5. 5Keep the destination unit with the result, and account for display rounding when using it in further calculations.

Reading your result

The Result row reports the entered energy quantity expressed in the selected To unit. For the default inputs, Result = 0.000948 BTU (IT) means that 1 joule and the displayed BTU (IT) value represent the same energy, subject to rounding. A smaller numerical value does not indicate a loss of energy; it reflects the larger size of the destination unit.

Limitations

The conversion assumes the specific unit definitions listed: thermochemical calorie and International Table BTU. Other calorie or BTU definitions can give slightly different results. Display rounding limits the precision of the shown value, and conversion does not improve the accuracy of the original measurement. This tool converts energy only; it does not calculate power, fuel use, equipment efficiency, or energy cost.

Common questions

Is the thermochemical calorie the same as a food Calorie?+

No. A thermochemical calorie equals 4.184 joules. A food Calorie usually means a kilocalorie, or 1,000 thermochemical calories, so food-label values must be expressed in small calories before selecting thermochemical calorie.

What does IT mean in BTU (IT)?+

IT means International Table. This calculator uses 1 BTU (IT) = 1,055.05585262 joules, rather than a thermochemical or other BTU definition.

Can I use kWh to convert a power rating in kW?+

Not directly. kWh measures energy, while kW measures power. To obtain energy from a constant power rating, multiply the power in kW by its operating time in hours, then convert that energy using kWh.

Why does 1 joule show as only 0.000948 BTU (IT)?+

One BTU (IT) contains 1,055.05585262 joules, so one joule is only a small fraction of a BTU (IT). Dividing by that factor and rounding gives the displayed 0.000948 BTU (IT).

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
