About the Torque Converter

The Torque Converter converts torque values between newton-metres (N-m) and pound-feet (lb-ft). Use it to express a torque specification in either unit without changing the physical torque it represents. The default conversion is 1 N-m = 0.737562 lb-ft.

Value
The torque magnitude to convert, expressed in the unit selected under From; the default is 1.
From
The input torque unit, either N-m (newton-metres) or lb-ft (pound-feet), with N-m selected by default.
To
The output torque unit, either lb-ft (pound-feet) or N-m (newton-metres), with lb-ft selected by default.

Formula and method

Let k = 1.3558179483314004 N-m per lb-ft. For N-m to lb-ft: T_out = T_in / k. For lb-ft to N-m: T_out = T_in × k. When From and To match: T_out = T_in. With the default inputs: T_out = (1 N-m) / (1.3558179483314004 N-m per lb-ft) ≈ 0.737562 lb-ft.
  • T_inThe entered torque value in the From unit.
  • T_outThe converted torque value in the To unit.
  • kThe conversion factor: 1 lb-ft equals 1.3558179483314004 N-m, using the international foot and standard pound-force.

The calculator checks the selected unit pair and applies the corresponding conversion factor. It divides by k when converting N-m to lb-ft, multiplies by k when converting lb-ft to N-m, and leaves the value unchanged when both units match. For the default inputs, dividing 1 by k gives the displayed result of 0.737562 lb-ft, rounded to six decimal places.

How to use the Torque Converter

  1. 1Enter the torque magnitude in Value; leave it at 1 to follow the default example.
  2. 2Select N-m under From for the default example.
  3. 3Select lb-ft under To for the default example.
  4. 4Read the converted result: 0.737562 lb-ft for the default inputs.
  5. 5Check the output unit before using the converted value in a torque specification or tool setting.

Reading your result

The Result row shows the entered torque expressed in the To unit. With the default inputs, Result = 0.737562 lb-ft means that 1 N-m and approximately 0.737562 lb-ft represent the same torque. The unit label is part of the result; the smaller numerical value does not indicate a reduction in physical torque.

Limitations

This tool supports only N-m and lb-ft. Here, lb-ft means pound-force feet, not a mass multiplied by a distance. Conversion does not improve the accuracy of the original measurement, and display rounding can introduce small differences when converting back. The calculator does not determine safe tightening torque, account for friction or fastener condition, or model an automotive torque converter.

Common questions

Does lb-ft mean pound-feet of torque?+

Yes. In this calculator, lb-ft denotes pound-force feet, a torque unit formed by multiplying force in pounds-force by a perpendicular lever arm in feet.

How do I convert lb-ft back to N-m?+

Select lb-ft under From and N-m under To. The calculator multiplies the entered value by 1.3558179483314004 to obtain torque in N-m.

Why is the default result 0.737562 lb-ft rather than 1 lb-ft?+

A pound-foot is a larger torque unit than a newton-metre. Dividing the default input of 1 N-m by the conversion factor gives approximately 0.737562 lb-ft.

Can I use this Torque Converter to calculate vehicle torque multiplication?+

No. This tool only converts torque units. It does not calculate the performance, slip, or torque multiplication of a vehicle's transmission torque converter.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
