About the Tobacco Pack-Years Calculator

The Tobacco Pack-Years Calculator estimates cumulative cigarette exposure from average cigarettes smoked per day and total years smoked. It uses a standard conversion of 20 cigarettes per pack. The result summarizes smoking history but does not estimate your individual likelihood of developing a disease.

Average cigarettes per day
The average number of cigarettes smoked daily during the years you smoked, measured in cigarettes per day; the default is 10.
Years smoked
The total duration of cigarette smoking, excluding periods when you did not smoke, measured in years; the default is 15.

Formula and method

PY = (C / 20) × Y; with the default inputs, PY = (10 / 20) × 15 = 7.5 pack-years.
  • PYCumulative cigarette exposure, measured in pack-years.
  • CAverage cigarettes smoked per day during smoking periods.
  • YTotal years smoked.
  • 20The standard number of cigarettes per pack used for this calculation.

Divide average cigarettes per day by 20 to convert daily cigarette consumption into packs per day, then multiply by years smoked. With 10 cigarettes per day, daily consumption is 0.5 packs; multiplying by 15 years gives 7.5 pack-years.

How to use the Tobacco Pack-Years Calculator

  1. 1Enter your average cigarettes per day, using 10 to reproduce the default example.
  2. 2Enter your total years smoked, using 15 for the default example and excluding smoke-free periods.
  3. 3If your smoking amount changed over time, use an average weighted by the duration of each smoking period.
  4. 4Read the Smoking exposure result: the default inputs produce 7.5 pack-years.
  5. 5Read the Note alongside the result to understand what this exposure estimate does not measure.

Reading your result

Smoking exposure reports cumulative cigarette consumption in pack-years. The default result of 7.5 pack-years represents 0.5 packs per day over 15 years, not a disease probability or a safety threshold. The Note states: “Does not quantify individual disease risk or exposure to other tobacco products.”

Limitations

The calculation assumes 20 cigarettes per pack and a representative average daily intake across the years smoked. Its accuracy depends on recalled smoking amounts and durations; an unweighted average can be misleading when smoking patterns change. Pack-years do not capture time since quitting, inhalation patterns, cigarette characteristics, secondhand smoke, or exposure from cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco, or vaping. People with the same pack-years may have different health risks, and this result alone cannot determine screening eligibility or establish a safe level of smoking.

Common questions

How should I calculate pack-years if my cigarette use changed over time?+

Calculate pack-years separately for each period with a different daily smoking amount, then add the results. Alternatively, enter a duration-weighted average: multiply each period's cigarettes per day by its years, add those products, and divide by total years smoked.

Should I include years when I had stopped smoking?+

No. Include only time spent smoking. Quitting stops additional cigarette exposure from accumulating, but it does not subtract previously accumulated pack-years; time since quitting is a separate health consideration.

What if the cigarette packs I bought did not contain 20 cigarettes?+

Enter the actual number of cigarettes smoked per day rather than the number of packs purchased. This calculator always converts that count using 20 cigarettes per standard pack.

Can I convert vaping, cigars, or smokeless tobacco into cigarette pack-years?+

This calculator does not provide those conversions. Record other tobacco or nicotine use separately and discuss it with a healthcare professional rather than treating it as equivalent cigarette exposure.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
