About the GFR Calculator

This calculator estimates glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation. It helps assess overall kidney filtration capacity based on routine blood serum creatinine tests, age, and sex.

Age
Patient's age in years (typically 18 to 120).
Sex
Biological sex assigned at birth (Male or Female), used to select formula constants.
Serum creatinine
Blood serum creatinine concentration, measured in mg/dL (typically 0.4 to 15.0 mg/dL).

Formula and method

eGFR = 142 × min(Scr / κ, 1)^α × max(Scr / κ, 1)^(-1.2) × 0.9938^Age × (1.012 if Female, else 1)
  • eGFREstimated glomerular filtration rate in mL/min/1.73m²
  • ScrSerum creatinine concentration in mg/dL
  • κSex-specific constant: 0.7 for females, 0.9 for males
  • αSex-specific exponent: -0.241 for females, -0.302 for males
  • AgeAge of the individual in years

The tool computes the ratio of serum creatinine to the sex-specific baseline κ, raises the bounded ratios (minimum and maximum against 1) to their respective power terms, and scales the result by age and female sex factors. The final eGFR is rounded to the nearest whole integer and mapped to standard kidney function stages ranging from G1 Normal down to G5 Failure.

How to use the GFR Calculator

  1. 1Determine κ (0.7 for female, 0.9 for male) and α (-0.241 for female, -0.302 for male).
  2. 2Calculate the standardized creatinine ratio s = Scr / κ.
  3. 3Evaluate 142 × min(s, 1)^α × max(s, 1)^(-1.2) × 0.9938^Age × (1.012 if female, 1 if male).
  4. 4Round the result to the nearest integer and assign the kidney disease stage (G1 if ≥ 90, G2 if ≥ 60, G3a if ≥ 45, G3b if ≥ 30, G4 if ≥ 15, or G5 if < 15).

Reading your result

An eGFR of 90 or higher corresponds to stage G1 (normal or high kidney function in the absence of other kidney damage). Values between 60 and 89 indicate mildly decreased function (G2), while values below 60 indicate moderate to severe loss of kidney function (stages G3a through G5).

Limitations

This equation assumes stable kidney function and does not apply accurately during acute kidney injury. It also does not account for unusual muscle mass, bodybuilder physiques, amputations, or dietary extremes that alter creatinine generation independently of kidney filtration.
