About the Body Type Calculator

The Body Type Calculator determines your anatomical body shape category and calculates your waist-to-hip ratio using horizontal body circumference measurements. It is commonly used for apparel sizing, styling, and basic body composition assessments.

Bust
Circumference around the fullest part of the chest, measured in centimeters (typically 60 to 160 cm).
Waist
Circumference around the narrowest point of the torso, measured in centimeters (typically 50 to 140 cm).
High hip
Circumference around the upper hip over the hip bone ridge, in centimeters (typically 60 to 150 cm).
Hip
Circumference around the fullest part of the hips and buttocks, in centimeters (typically 70 to 170 cm).

Formula and method

Waist-to-Hip Ratio = w / h

Classification rules evaluated in order:
1. Hourglass: (b - h <= 2.5) and (h - b < 9) and (b - w >= 23 or h - w >= 25)
2. Pear (triangle): (h - b >= 9) and (h - w < 23)
3. Inverted triangle: (b - h >= 9)
4. Rectangle: (h - b < 9) and (b - h < 9) and (b - w < 23)
5. Spoon: All other remaining metric profiles
  • bBust circumference in centimeters
  • wWaist circumference in centimeters
  • hFull hip circumference in centimeters

The tool calculates the waist-to-hip ratio by dividing waist by hip circumference, rounded to two decimal places. It then applies a sequential rule-based conditional tree evaluating the absolute differences between bust, hip, and waist measurements to assign one of five body shape categories.

How to use the Body Type Calculator

  1. 1Measure your bust, waist, high hip, and full hip circumferences in centimeters.
  2. 2Evaluate the mathematical differences between bust and hip, and between hips/bust and waist.
  3. 3Match the differences against the classification thresholds to assign Hourglass, Pear, Inverted triangle, Rectangle, or Spoon.
  4. 4Divide the waist circumference by the full hip circumference to compute the waist-to-hip ratio.

Reading your result

The primary result labels your silhouette into one of five geometric body shapes based on how proportions are balanced. The waist-to-hip ratio reflects central body tapering, where lower values indicate a more pronounced waist relative to the hips.

Limitations

The high hip input is collected on the form but is not utilized in the mathematical classification logic. The calculation relies on strict centimeter thresholds, meaning slight measurement fluctuations near boundary values (such as 9 cm or 23 cm) can switch the assigned category.

Common questions

Why is the High hip measurement collected if it is not in the formula?+

High hip measurements are standard in full garment drafting systems, but this specific classification algorithm classifies silhouette based entirely on bust, waist, and fullest hip values.

What is the difference between a Pear and a Spoon shape in this calculator?+

A Pear shape has hips at least 9 cm larger than the bust with a modest hip-to-waist difference (under 23 cm), whereas Spoon captures larger hip-to-waist differences that do not meet the hourglass bust criteria.

Can I use inches instead of centimeters?+

No, the algorithm uses hardcoded metric cutoff thresholds (such as 2.5 cm, 9 cm, and 23 cm). Entering inches directly will distort the categorization logic.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
