About the Take-Home-Paycheck Calculator

This calculator estimates your net take-home pay on an annual and per-paycheck basis after deducting federal income tax, FICA contributions (Social Security and Medicare), and state income tax. It is designed for US employees who want an estimate of their actual cash earnings after pre-tax benefits and mandatory withholdings.

Annual salary
Gross yearly pay before any taxes or deductions, in dollars.
Filing status
Federal tax filing category: Single, Married filing jointly, or Head of household, which determines the standard deduction and tax brackets.
State tax rate
Estimated effective or flat state income tax rate entered as a percentage (e.g., 0% to 13%).
Pre-tax deductions / yr
Total annual pre-tax payroll deductions such as traditional 401(k), HSA, FSA, or eligible health insurance premiums, in dollars.
Pay frequency
Number of pay periods per year: Bi-weekly (26), Weekly (52), Semi-monthly (24), or Monthly (12).

Formula and method

Taxable Federal = max(0, Salary − PreTax − StandardDeduction)
Federal Tax = fedTax(Taxable Federal, FilingStatus)
Social Security = min(Salary, 184500) × 0.062
Medicare = Salary × 0.0145
State Tax = (Salary − PreTax) × (StateRate / 100)
Annual Take-Home = Salary − PreTax − Federal Tax − Social Security − Medicare − State Tax
Paycheck Take-Home = Annual Take-Home / PayPeriods
  • SalaryGross annual earnings
  • PreTaxTotal annual pre-tax contributions
  • StandardDeductionIRS standard deduction corresponding to the chosen filing status
  • StateRateUser-entered state tax percentage
  • PayPeriodsPay periods per year (52 for weekly, 26 for bi-weekly, 24 for semi-monthly, 12 for monthly)

The tool computes federal income tax by applying marginal tax brackets to gross pay reduced by annual pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction. Social Security is calculated at 6.2% up to the statutory wage base limit of $184,500, Medicare is assessed at 1.45% on all salary, and state tax applies flatly to salary minus pre-tax deductions. The resulting net annual pay is divided by the number of pay periods in the selected pay frequency.

How to use the Take-Home-Paycheck Calculator

  1. 1Subtract annual pre-tax deductions and the filing status standard deduction from gross salary to determine federal taxable income, then compute federal income tax.
  2. 2Calculate FICA taxes: 6.2% for Social Security on salary capped at $184,500, and 1.45% for Medicare on total salary.
  3. 3Multiply state-taxable wages (gross salary minus pre-tax deductions) by the specified state tax rate.
  4. 4Subtract pre-tax deductions, federal tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state tax from gross salary to get annual take-home pay, then divide by the pay frequency count for per-paycheck take-home.

Reading your result

Review the annual and per-paycheck take-home amounts to gauge your net disposable income. The breakdown shows exactly how much is allocated to federal tax, mandatory FICA payroll contributions, and state tax, allowing you to see the marginal impact of adjusting pre-tax deductions.

Limitations

This calculator applies a flat percentage for state tax rather than progressive state brackets or local/city income taxes. It also does not include the Additional Medicare Tax (0.9% for high earners), post-tax payroll deductions (like Roth contributions or wage garnishments), or federal tax credits.

Common questions

Why is Social Security tax calculated differently from Medicare tax?+

Social Security tax (6.2%) only applies up to an annual wage cap ($184,500 in this calculation), whereas Medicare tax (1.45%) applies to all earned wages regardless of income level.

Do pre-tax deductions reduce all taxes equally?+

In this model, pre-tax deductions reduce federal and state taxable income. However, FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare) are computed on gross salary, as many retirement contributions (like traditional 401(k) plans) remain subject to FICA taxes.

How does pay frequency affect my total annual take-home pay?+

Pay frequency does not change your total annual net income; it simply divides the annual take-home pay across 12, 24, 26, or 52 pay periods to show the net amount of each paycheck.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
