About the Overtime Pay Calculator
The Overtime Pay Calculator estimates weekly gross pay from your hourly wage, hours worked, overtime threshold, and overtime multiplier. It separates regular pay from overtime pay so you can see how hours above your chosen threshold affect your total earnings before taxes and deductions.
- Hourly wage ($)
- Your regular hourly pay rate in dollars per hour, with a default of $25.
- Hours worked (hours)
- The total hours worked during the week, with a default of 48 hours.
- Overtime threshold (hours)
- The number of weekly hours paid at the regular rate before overtime begins, with a default of 40 hours.
- Overtime multiplier (times)
- The factor applied to your hourly wage for overtime hours, with a default of 1.5 times the regular rate.
Formula and method
H_r = min(H, T); H_o = max(H - T, 0); P_r = W × H_r; P_o = W × M × H_o; G = P_r + P_o.
- WRegular hourly wage in dollars per hour.
- HTotal hours worked in the week.
- TWeekly overtime threshold in hours.
- MOvertime rate multiplier.
- H_rRegular hours, limited to the overtime threshold.
- H_oOvertime hours above the threshold, or zero if the threshold is not exceeded.
- P_rRegular pay in dollars.
- P_oTotal pay for overtime hours in dollars, including both base pay and the overtime premium.
- GWeekly gross pay in dollars before taxes and deductions.
Split the week's hours into regular hours up to the threshold and overtime hours above it. Multiply regular hours by the hourly wage, multiply overtime hours by the hourly wage and overtime multiplier, then add the two pay amounts. With the defaults, regular hours are min(48, 40) = 40 and overtime hours are max(48 - 40, 0) = 8. Regular pay = 40 × $25 = $1,000.00; Overtime pay = 8 × $25 × 1.5 = $300.00; Gross pay = $1,000.00 + $300.00 = $1,300.00.

Reading your result
Regular pay is earnings for hours up to the threshold: $1,000.00 with the default inputs. Overtime pay is the full earnings for hours above the threshold at the multiplied rate: $300.00, not merely the extra premium above base pay. Gross pay is the sum of both rows: $1,300.00 before any taxes, insurance contributions, retirement contributions, or other deductions.
Limitations
This estimate assumes nonnegative inputs, one hourly wage, one weekly overtime threshold, and one overtime multiplier. It does not determine overtime eligibility or verify that your settings comply with employment law or a contract. It does not account for daily overtime, double-time tiers, multiple pay rates, bonuses affecting the regular rate, shift differentials, or special treatment of paid leave. Taxes and deductions are excluded, so gross pay is not take-home pay. Payroll rounding practices may also affect the final amount.
Common questions
What happens if my weekly hours do not exceed the overtime threshold?+
All hours worked are paid at the regular hourly wage. Overtime hours and overtime pay are zero, so gross pay equals regular pay.
Does the overtime multiplier represent the full rate or only the extra premium?+
It represents the full rate. With the default wage of $25 and multiplier of 1.5, the overtime rate is $37.50 per hour. The 8 overtime hours therefore earn $300.00 in total.
Why can I change the 40-hour threshold and 1.5 multiplier?+
These settings let you estimate pay using the weekly threshold and overtime rate applicable to your situation. The defaults are calculation settings, not a determination that you qualify for overtime or that those rules apply to your job.
Will the default $1,300.00 gross pay equal my weekly paycheck?+
Not necessarily. The $1,300.00 is regular pay plus overtime pay before withholding and deductions; your take-home amount depends on your payroll circumstances.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
