About the Data Storage Converter
The Data Storage Converter converts a storage quantity between byte, KB, MB, GB, TB, KiB, MiB, and GiB. It distinguishes decimal units such as GB from binary units such as GiB, which use different byte counts. The default selection converts 1 byte to GiB and displays Result = 0 GiB because the converted amount is very small at the displayed precision.
- Value
- The storage quantity to convert, expressed in the selected From unit, with a default of 1.
- From
- The source unit for Value—byte, KB, MB, GB, TB, KiB, MiB, or GiB—with byte selected by default.
- To
- The destination unit for the result—GiB, MiB, KiB, TB, GB, MB, KB, or byte—with GiB selected by default.
Formula and method
R = V × F_from / F_to. Byte factors are: byte = 1; KB = 10^3; MB = 10^6; GB = 10^9; TB = 10^12; KiB = 2^10; MiB = 2^20; GiB = 2^30. For the default inputs: R = 1 × 1 / 1,073,741,824 = 0.000000000931322574615478515625 GiB; the displayed result is Result = 0 GiB.
- RThe converted storage quantity in the selected To unit, before display rounding.
- VThe quantity entered in Value.
- F_fromThe number of bytes in one unit of the selected From unit.
- F_toThe number of bytes in one unit of the selected To unit.
Multiply Value by the source unit's byte factor to express the quantity in bytes, then divide by the destination unit's byte factor. Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000, while binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. The displayed result may round a very small nonzero quantity to zero, as in the default example.

How to use the Data Storage Converter
- 1Enter the storage quantity in Value; leave it at 1 to follow the default example.
- 2Choose the source unit in From; the default is byte.
- 3Choose the destination unit in To; the default is GiB.
- 4Read the Result row in the destination unit. With the default inputs, it displays Result = 0 GiB.
- 5For a result displayed as zero, consider a smaller destination unit to make the quantity easier to read.
Reading your result
The Result row reports the converted quantity followed by the selected To unit. In the default example, Result = 0 GiB is a display-level zero, not an indication that 1 byte contains no data. The exact converted quantity is positive but too small to appear as nonzero at the precision used in this example.
Limitations
The conversion assumes KB, MB, GB, and TB are decimal units and KiB, MiB, and GiB are binary units; some software uses decimal labels for binary quantities. Display rounding can hide small values, and the default example does not establish the calculator's exact rounding rule or number of displayed decimal places. This tool converts storage quantities only: it does not account for filesystem overhead, compression, reserved capacity, or usable disk space. Bits and data-transfer rates are not supported units.
Common questions
Why does converting 1 byte to GiB show 0 GiB?+
One byte equals 1/1,073,741,824 GiB, which is approximately 0.0000000009313225746 GiB. The default output displays this tiny quantity as 0 GiB because of its display precision, not because the mathematical result is zero.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?+
GB means 1,000,000,000 bytes, while GiB means 1,073,741,824 bytes. Selecting the correct label matters because the same byte quantity has different numerical values in these units.
Which unit should I select if my operating system labels a binary capacity as GB?+
Select GiB if the reported quantity was calculated using 1,073,741,824 bytes per unit, even if the software labels it GB. Check the software's unit convention rather than relying solely on its displayed abbreviation.
Can I use this converter for internet speeds in Mbps?+
No. Mbps measures megabits per second, whereas this converter handles byte-based storage quantities without a time component. A transfer-rate conversion requires both bit-to-byte conversion and a rate unit.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
