About the Sleep Efficiency Calculator
The Sleep Efficiency Calculator calculates the percentage of your time in bed that you spend asleep. By comparing total minutes asleep with total minutes in bed, it helps you distinguish sleep time from time spent awake during the same sleep period.
- Total time asleep (minutes)
- The estimated minutes you actually slept during the recorded time in bed, excluding time spent falling asleep and any awake periods; the default is 420 minutes.
- Total time in bed (minutes)
- The total minutes in the same bed period, including both sleep and awake time; the default is 480 minutes.
Formula and method
SE = (T_asleep / T_bed) × 100; with the default inputs, SE = (420 / 480) × 100 = 87.5%.
- SESleep efficiency, expressed as a percentage.
- T_asleepTotal time asleep, in minutes.
- T_bedTotal time in bed for the same period, in minutes.
Divide total time asleep by total time in bed, then multiply the ratio by 100 to express it as a percentage. Time in bed must be greater than zero, and time asleep must be nonnegative and no greater than time in bed. The default calculation divides 420 by 480 and multiplies by 100, producing 87.5%.

- Total time asleep420 minutes
- Total time in bed480 minutes
Results
- Sleep efficiency87.5 %

How to use the Sleep Efficiency Calculator
- 1Choose one sleep period and identify its total time in bed, including time spent awake.
- 2Estimate the minutes actually spent asleep, subtracting time spent falling asleep and awake during that period.
- 3Enter total time asleep in minutes; the default is 420.
- 4Enter total time in bed in minutes; the default is 480, and this value must be positive and at least as large as time asleep.
- 5Read the sleep efficiency percentage alongside the approximation note.
Reading your result
The “Sleep efficiency” row shows the share of time in bed spent asleep. With 420 minutes asleep and 480 minutes in bed, “Sleep efficiency = 87.5 %” means you spent 87.5% of that bed period asleep. A higher percentage means less of the recorded bed period was spent awake, but does not by itself establish that sleep was sufficient or restorative. The “Note” row reads “Approximation; individual results vary.” This indicates that the result is an estimate based on your inputs, not a clinical assessment.
Limitations
The calculation assumes both inputs describe the same sleep period and are recorded consistently. Recalled sleep times and wearable estimates may be inaccurate, particularly for brief awakenings. Sleep efficiency does not measure sleep stages, breathing disturbances, daytime functioning, or whether you slept long enough. A single result cannot diagnose a sleep disorder, and reducing time in bed simply to raise the percentage is not necessarily beneficial.
Common questions
Should I include time spent falling asleep in total time asleep?+
No. Include it in total time in bed, but exclude it from total time asleep. Apply the same rule to awakenings before you get out of bed.
Why do the default inputs produce 87.5% sleep efficiency?+
The calculator divides 420 minutes asleep by 480 minutes in bed, giving 0.875, then multiplies by 100 to obtain 87.5%.
Does high sleep efficiency mean I am getting enough sleep?+
Not necessarily. You can spend most of a short bed period asleep and still get insufficient sleep. Consider total sleep duration and how you feel during the day as well as efficiency.
Can I use sleep times reported by a wearable?+
Yes, as estimates, provided the asleep and in-bed values cover the same period. Wearables can misclassify quiet wakefulness as sleep, so the resulting percentage may not match a clinical measurement.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
