About the Shift Differential Pay Calculator

The Shift Differential Pay Calculator adds a flat hourly premium to eligible shift hours and combines it with base wages for all hours worked. It estimates differential pay and gross pay without making overtime adjustments. With the default inputs, the differential adds $72.00 to base wages, producing $1,032.00 in gross pay.

Base hourly wage ($)
Your regular wage in dollars per hour before the shift differential, with a default of $24.
Total hours (hours)
All hours worked during the calculation period, including eligible shift hours, measured in hours with a default of 40.
Eligible shift hours (hours)
The portion of total hours that qualifies for the shift premium, measured in hours with a default of 24.
Hourly shift differential ($)
The extra dollars paid per eligible shift hour, with a default of $3.

Formula and method

D = E × S; B = W × H; G = B + D = (W × H) + (E × S). With the default inputs: D = 24 × $3 = $72.00; B = $24 × 40 = $960.00; G = $960.00 + $72.00 = $1,032.00.
  • WBase hourly wage in dollars per hour.
  • HTotal hours worked, including eligible shift hours.
  • EHours within the total that qualify for the shift differential.
  • SFlat hourly shift differential in dollars per eligible hour.
  • DAdditional differential pay in dollars.
  • BBase wages for all total hours in dollars.
  • GGross pay in dollars before taxes and deductions.

Multiply total hours by the base hourly wage to calculate base wages. Separately, multiply eligible shift hours by the hourly shift differential. Add that differential pay to base wages once; eligible shift hours are already included in total hours and do not receive a second base-wage payment.

How to use the Shift Differential Pay Calculator

  1. 1Enter your base hourly wage; the default is $24 per hour.
  2. 2Enter total hours worked for the period; the default is 40 hours, including eligible shift hours.
  3. 3Enter the hours that qualify for the differential; the default is 24 hours, and this amount should not exceed total hours.
  4. 4Enter the flat hourly shift differential; the default is $3 per eligible hour.
  5. 5Review the outputs: the default inputs produce $72.00 in differential pay and $1,032.00 in gross pay.

Reading your result

Differential pay is only the additional amount earned for eligible shift hours: $72.00 with the defaults. Gross pay is base wages for all total hours plus differential pay: $1,032.00 with the defaults. Gross pay includes the differential already, so do not add the two output rows together; it is not take-home pay.

Limitations

This calculator assumes one base hourly wage and one flat dollar-per-hour differential for the entire period. Eligible shift hours must be part of total hours, and inputs should be nonnegative. It does not determine which shifts qualify, apply percentage-based or stacked premiums, or account for overtime, holiday premiums, bonuses, taxes, or deductions. Where overtime rules apply, shift differentials may affect the regular rate used to calculate overtime; this tool does not perform that adjustment or establish legally required pay.

Common questions

Should I add eligible shift hours to total hours?+

No. The 24 eligible shift hours in the default example are included within the 40 total hours. Entering them again as additional total hours would overstate base wages.

Does the $3 differential replace the $24 base hourly wage?+

No. It adds $3 for each eligible hour on top of the $24 base wage. With 24 eligible hours, the additional differential pay is $72.00.

What happens if none of my hours qualify for the shift differential?+

Enter zero eligible shift hours. Differential pay will be zero, and gross pay will equal the base hourly wage multiplied by total hours.

Will this calculator increase the differential for overtime hours?+

No. It applies the entered flat differential to eligible hours and the base wage to all total hours without overtime adjustments. If your period includes overtime, use a calculation that accounts for applicable overtime rules and the differential's treatment in the regular rate.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
