About the Remaining Macro Energy Calculator

The Remaining Macro Energy Calculator estimates how much of your daily energy target remains after accounting for the protein, carbohydrate and fat you have consumed. It converts the entered grams into kilocalories using standard energy factors, then subtracts that total from your target.

Daily energy target (kcal)
Your planned total energy intake for the day in kilocalories (kcal), with a default of 2200.
Protein consumed (g)
The protein you have consumed so far that day in grams (g), with a default of 100.
Carbohydrate consumed (g)
The carbohydrate you have consumed so far that day in grams (g), with a default of 200.
Fat consumed (g)
The fat you have consumed so far that day in grams (g), with a default of 60.

Formula and method

R = T − (4P + 4C + 9F). With the default inputs: R = 2200 − (4 × 100 + 4 × 200 + 9 × 60) = 2200 − 1740 = 460 kcal.
  • RRemaining energy in kcal.
  • TDaily energy target in kcal.
  • PProtein consumed in grams, multiplied by 4 kcal/g.
  • CCarbohydrate consumed in grams, multiplied by 4 kcal/g.
  • FFat consumed in grams, multiplied by 9 kcal/g.

Multiply protein and carbohydrate grams by 4 kcal/g and fat grams by 9 kcal/g. Add these contributions to estimate the energy consumed, then subtract the sum from the daily energy target. The default entries contribute 400 kcal from protein, 800 kcal from carbohydrate and 540 kcal from fat, totaling 1740 kcal and leaving 460 kcal.

How to use the Remaining Macro Energy Calculator

  1. 1Enter your daily energy target in kcal; the default is 2200.
  2. 2Enter the protein consumed so far today in grams; the default is 100.
  3. 3Enter the carbohydrate consumed so far today in grams; the default is 200.
  4. 4Enter the fat consumed so far today in grams; the default is 60.
  5. 5Read the remaining energy result and the note to see whether the entered macros fall below or exceed your target.

Reading your result

Remaining energy: the estimated kcal left within your entered daily target, which is 460 kcal with the default inputs. A positive result means energy remains, zero means the macro-derived energy equals the target, and a negative result means it exceeds the target by the absolute value shown. Note: A negative result means the entered target has been exceeded.

Limitations

The calculation assumes 4 kcal per gram of protein and carbohydrate and 9 kcal per gram of fat. These are standard estimates; food-label totals may differ because of rounding, fiber, sugar alcohols and food-specific energy factors. Alcohol energy is not included. Accuracy depends on complete intake entries from the same day, and the tool neither determines an appropriate daily target nor assesses nutrient adequacy or remaining grams of each macro.

Common questions

Why do the default inputs leave 460 kcal?+

Protein supplies 100 × 4 = 400 kcal, carbohydrate supplies 200 × 4 = 800 kcal, and fat supplies 60 × 9 = 540 kcal. Subtracting their combined 1740 kcal from the 2200 kcal target leaves 460 kcal.

Does a negative remaining energy result mean I entered something incorrectly?+

Not necessarily. It means the energy calculated from your entered protein, carbohydrate and fat exceeds your entered daily target. Check the entries and units if that result is unexpected.

Does the 460 kcal result tell me how many grams of each macro I should eat next?+

No. It is a remaining energy amount, not a protein, carbohydrate or fat allowance. The calculator does not use macro-specific targets or recommend how to divide that energy.

Why might this result differ from my food tracker’s remaining calories?+

This tool uses only the entered macro grams and the 4/4/9 energy factors. A tracker may use food-label calories, account differently for fiber or sugar alcohols, include alcohol, or adjust your target for activity.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
