About the Protein Meal Distribution Calculator

The Protein Meal Distribution Calculator divides an independently chosen daily protein target evenly across your meals. Enter your target in grams and your planned number of meals to find the protein amount to aim for at each meal. This tool distributes a target you already have; it does not determine how much protein you need.

Daily protein target (g)
Your independently chosen total protein target for the day, measured in grams, with a default of 120 g.
Meals per day
The number of meals across which you want to divide your daily protein target, expressed as a whole-number count, with a default of 4.

Formula and method

P = D / M; with the default inputs, P = 120 g / 4 = 30 g per meal.
  • PProtein allocated to each meal, in grams.
  • DIndependently chosen daily protein target, in grams.
  • MNumber of meals per day, a positive whole-number count.

Divide the daily protein target by the number of meals, assigning the same protein amount to every meal. With the default inputs, dividing 120 g by 4 produces 30 g per meal.

How to use the Protein Meal Distribution Calculator

  1. 1Choose your daily protein target independently; this calculator does not estimate your protein needs.
  2. 2Enter that target in Daily protein target (g), or keep the default of 120.
  3. 3Enter a positive whole number in Meals per day, or keep the default of 4.
  4. 4Read the protein-per-meal result: the default inputs give 30 g per meal.
  5. 5Use the result to plan the protein content of each meal while keeping your daily total in mind.

Reading your result

The protein-per-meal output is the amount of protein allocated to each meal, not the weight of the food you should eat. With a daily target of 120 g and 4 meals, the output is 30 g per meal. Each meal receives the same allocation, and the four allocations total 120 g.

Limitations

The calculation assumes an equal split across all counted meals. It does not establish whether your daily target is appropriate, account for protein quality or meal timing, or convert protein grams into food portions. Equal allocation is a planning approach, not a guarantee of better fitness outcomes or a per-meal absorption limit. The meal count must be a positive whole number, and the protein target should not be negative. If results are rounded for display, the displayed meal amounts may not sum exactly to the daily target.

Common questions

Does the default target of 120 g mean I should eat that much protein daily?+

No. It is a default input for demonstrating the calculation, not a personalized recommendation. Choose your daily target separately based on your needs and any relevant professional guidance.

Can I include protein-containing snacks in the meal count?+

Yes, if you want each counted snack to receive the same protein allocation as a meal. Count each eating occasion you want included; the calculator does not assign smaller portions to snacks.

Does 30 g per meal mean eating 30 g of a protein-rich food?+

No. It means 30 g of protein within the meal. Use food labels or food composition data to determine the portions needed, including protein from all foods in that meal.

What if my meals contain unequal amounts of protein?+

The calculator provides an equal-split reference rather than a requirement for every meal. You can allocate different amounts yourself while checking that their sum matches your independently chosen daily target.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
