About the Net Bonus Gross-Up Calculator

The Net Bonus Gross-Up Calculator estimates the gross bonus needed to deliver a desired take-home bonus after withholding at a combined rate. It also shows how much of that gross bonus is withheld. With a desired net bonus of $5,000 and a combined withholding rate of 35%, the required gross bonus is $7,692.31 and withholding is $2,692.31.

Desired net bonus ($)
The bonus amount you want to receive after withholding, entered in dollars and defaulting to $5,000.
Combined withholding rate (%)
The total percentage of the gross bonus assumed to be withheld, entered as a percentage and defaulting to 35%.

Formula and method

r = p / 100; G = N / (1 - r); W = G × r = G - N. With the default inputs: G = $5,000 / (1 - 0.35) = $7,692.31; W = G × 0.35 = $2,692.31, rounded to cents.
  • NDesired net bonus in dollars.
  • pCombined withholding rate entered as a percentage.
  • rCombined withholding rate expressed as a decimal.
  • GRequired gross bonus in dollars, before withholding.
  • WWithholding amount in dollars deducted from the gross bonus.

Convert the combined withholding percentage to a decimal, then subtract it from 1 to find the share of the gross bonus the employee keeps. Divide the desired net bonus by that share to obtain the required gross bonus. Multiply the unrounded gross bonus by the decimal withholding rate to calculate withholding, and round the displayed dollar results to cents.

How to use the Net Bonus Gross-Up Calculator

  1. 1Enter the desired take-home amount in Desired net bonus ($); the default is $5,000.
  2. 2Enter the combined percentage expected to be withheld from the bonus; the default is 35%.
  3. 3Check that the net bonus is nonnegative and the withholding rate is at least 0% but less than 100%.
  4. 4Run the calculation and review the required gross bonus and withholding amount.
  5. 5For the default inputs, confirm that $7,692.31 gross minus $2,692.31 withheld leaves the desired $5,000 net bonus.

Reading your result

Required gross bonus is the amount that must be paid before the specified withholding: $7,692.31 with the default inputs. Withholding amount is the portion deducted under that rate: $2,692.31. The difference is the desired net bonus of $5,000. The gross bonus is not necessarily the employer's total cost, because employer-side payroll taxes and other costs are not included.

Limitations

This calculation assumes one constant combined withholding rate applies to the entire gross bonus. It does not determine the correct rate or model tax brackets, payroll tax caps, supplemental-wage rules, fixed deductions, or deductions that change as pay increases. Withholding is a prepayment and may differ from final tax liability. Payroll rounding can produce small differences from these estimates. A rate of 100% or more is outside the formula's supported range; confirm the applicable rate and payroll treatment with your payroll team or tax professional.

Common questions

Why can't I just add 35% to my desired net bonus?+

The 35% withholding applies to the entire gross bonus, including the extra amount added to cover withholding. You must divide $5,000 by the retained share, 0.65, rather than simply increase the net amount by 35%. This gives the required gross bonus of $7,692.31.

What should I include in the combined withholding rate?+

Include applicable employee-side withholding that is proportional to the gross bonus, such as federal, state, and local income tax withholding and employee payroll taxes. Combine rates only when they apply to the same full bonus amount. Do not include employer-side taxes, and do not assume the default 35% is your actual payroll rate.

Does the $2,692.31 withholding amount represent the final tax on my bonus?+

No. It is the estimated amount withheld from the $7,692.31 gross bonus at the supplied 35% rate. Final tax liability depends on your overall income, deductions, credits, and applicable tax rules.

What happens if the withholding rate is 0% or 100%?+

At 0%, the gross bonus equals the desired net bonus and withholding is zero. At 100%, none of the gross bonus is retained, so no finite gross bonus can deliver a positive net amount and the formula divides by zero.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
