About the Magnetic Flux Density Converter

The Magnetic Flux Density Converter converts magnetic flux density between tesla, gauss, and millitesla. It expresses the same magnetic field quantity in a different unit without changing its physical magnitude. With the default inputs, 1 tesla converts to 1,000 millitesla.

Value
Enter the magnetic flux density in the unit selected under From; the default value is 1.
From
Select the input unit—tesla (T), gauss (G), or millitesla (mT)—with tesla selected by default.
To
Select the output unit—millitesla (mT), gauss (G), or tesla (T)—with millitesla selected by default.

Formula and method

B_out = B_in × (k_from / k_to), where k_tesla = 1, k_gauss = 0.0001, and k_millitesla = 0.001. For the default inputs: B_out = 1 × (1 / 0.001) = 1,000 millitesla.
  • B_inThe numerical magnetic flux density value entered in the From unit.
  • B_outThe numerical magnetic flux density result expressed in the To unit.
  • k_fromThe number of tesla per unit of the selected From unit.
  • k_toThe number of tesla per unit of the selected To unit.
  • k_tesla, k_gauss, k_milliteslaThe conversion factors to tesla: 1 T per tesla, 0.0001 T per gauss, and 0.001 T per millitesla, respectively.

Multiply the input value by its conversion factor to express it in tesla, then divide by the destination unit's conversion factor. The unit relationships are exact: 1 tesla = 1,000 millitesla = 10,000 gauss.

How to use the Magnetic Flux Density Converter

  1. 1Enter 1 in Value to follow the default worked example.
  2. 2Select tesla under From.
  3. 3Select millitesla under To.
  4. 4Read the Result: 1,000 millitesla, which represents the same magnetic flux density as the original 1 tesla.

Reading your result

The Result row gives the converted numerical value followed by the selected destination unit. For the default inputs, Result = 1,000 millitesla. The larger number reflects the smaller size of the millitesla unit, not an increase in the physical magnetic flux density.

Limitations

This tool only converts magnetic flux density B among tesla, gauss, and millitesla. It does not convert magnetic flux in webers or magnetic field strength H in amperes per meter; relating B to H requires information about the medium. Conversion factors are exact, but input measurement uncertainty and any display rounding still affect the reported precision. A converted value alone does not establish whether magnetic exposure is safe.

Common questions

Why does 1 tesla become 1,000 millitesla?+

The prefix milli means one-thousandth, so a millitesla is 0.001 tesla. Dividing 1 tesla by 0.001 tesla per millitesla gives 1,000 millitesla.

How do gauss and millitesla relate?+

One gauss equals 0.0001 tesla, while one millitesla equals 0.001 tesla. Therefore, 1 millitesla equals 10 gauss.

Can this calculator convert tesla to webers?+

No. Tesla measures magnetic flux density, while the weber measures magnetic flux. Computing flux requires the field distribution and surface geometry; for a uniform field perpendicular to a flat surface, flux equals magnetic flux density multiplied by area.

Does the material affect the conversion between tesla and gauss?+

No. Tesla and gauss express the same quantity, so their unit conversion does not depend on the material. Material properties matter when relating magnetic flux density B to magnetic field strength H, which is a different calculation.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
