About the Hourly to Annual Pay Calculator

The Hourly to Annual Pay Calculator converts an hourly wage into estimated annual gross pay using your paid hours per week and paid weeks per year. It also divides that annual estimate by 12 to show average monthly gross pay. With the default inputs of $28 per hour, 40 paid hours per week, and 50 paid weeks per year, the estimates are $56,000.00 annually and $4,666.67 per month.

Hourly wage ($)
Your gross pay rate in dollars per paid hour, before taxes and deductions, defaults to $28.
Paid hours per week (hours)
The number of hours you receive pay for in a typical paid week, measured in hours, defaults to 40.
Paid weeks per year (weeks)
The number of weeks you receive pay for during the year, measured in weeks, defaults to 50.

Formula and method

A = w × h × p; M = A ÷ 12. With the default inputs: A = 28 × 40 × 50 = $56,000.00; M = 56,000 ÷ 12 = $4,666.67, rounded to cents.
  • wHourly wage in dollars per paid hour.
  • hPaid hours per week.
  • pPaid weeks per year.
  • AEstimated annual gross pay in dollars.
  • MAverage monthly gross pay in dollars.

Multiply the hourly wage by paid hours per week to find gross pay for a typical paid week. Multiply that amount by paid weeks per year to estimate annual gross pay, then divide the annual amount by 12 to find average monthly gross pay. Display monetary outputs rounded to two decimal places.

Reading your result

Annual gross pay is the estimated total earned over the year before taxes and deductions; the default inputs produce $56,000.00. Average monthly gross pay spreads that annual total evenly across all 12 months; the default result is $4,666.67. This monthly average is not a prediction of any particular month's paychecks, especially if you have unpaid weeks or receive weekly or biweekly pay.

Limitations

The calculation assumes one hourly rate and the same number of paid hours in each paid week. It does not separately account for overtime premiums, shift differentials, bonuses, tips, commissions, or pay raises. It does not subtract taxes, insurance premiums, retirement contributions, or other deductions, so it is not a take-home pay estimate. Paid leave should be included only to the extent it is paid at the entered rate, and unpaid time must be reflected in the hours or weeks entered without being subtracted twice.

Common questions

Should paid vacation count toward paid weeks per year?+

Yes, include vacation weeks if you receive your usual pay for them at the entered hourly rate and weekly hours. Exclude fully unpaid weeks; for partial unpaid weeks, adjust your average paid hours or equivalent paid weeks without counting the same reduction twice.

Why does the calculator use 50 paid weeks in the default example?+

The default assumes you receive pay for 50 weeks during the year; it does not assume every week is paid. Combined with $28 per hour and 40 paid hours per week, this gives annual gross pay of $56,000.00.

Can I include overtime hours in paid hours per week?+

Every hour entered is multiplied by the same hourly wage. Including overtime hours at your regular rate will not capture an overtime premium, so premium overtime earnings need to be calculated separately.

Why might my actual monthly pay differ from $4,666.67?+

The default monthly result is $56,000.00 divided evenly across 12 months, not a paycheck schedule. Actual monthly gross pay can vary with the number of paydays, unpaid time, or changing hours, and take-home pay is reduced by taxes and deductions.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
