About the HOMA-IR Calculator
The HOMA-IR Calculator estimates HOMA1 insulin resistance using fasting glucose in mg/dL and fasting insulin in µIU/mL. It multiplies these two measurements and divides by 405 to produce a dimensionless index. This tool provides an educational estimate for adults, not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.
- Fasting glucose (mg/dL)
- Your fasting blood glucose concentration in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), with a default value of 95.
- Fasting insulin (µIU/mL)
- Your fasting blood insulin concentration in micro-international units per milliliter (µIU/mL), with a default value of 8.
Formula and method
HOMA1-IR = (G × I) / 405; with the default inputs, (95 × 8) / 405 = 1.876543… ≈ 1.88.
- HOMA1-IRThe dimensionless insulin resistance index estimated by the original homeostasis model assessment formula.
- GFasting glucose concentration in mg/dL.
- IFasting insulin concentration in µIU/mL.
- 405The normalization constant used when glucose is expressed in mg/dL and insulin in µIU/mL.
Multiply fasting glucose by fasting insulin, then divide the product by 405. Round the resulting HOMA1-IR index to two decimal places for display. For the default measurements, 95 × 8 = 760, and 760 / 405 rounds to 1.88.

Inputs
- Fasting glucose95 mg/dL
- Fasting insulin8 µIU/mL

How to use the HOMA-IR Calculator
- 1Obtain fasting glucose and insulin results collected together under your laboratory's fasting instructions.
- 2Enter fasting glucose in mg/dL; the default value is 95.
- 3Enter fasting insulin in µIU/mL; the default value is 8.
- 4Calculate HOMA1-IR; the default inputs produce 1.88.
- 5Read both note rows before interpreting the result, and discuss clinical significance with a qualified healthcare professional.
Reading your result
The HOMA1-IR row shows the calculated index: 1.88 for fasting glucose of 95 mg/dL and fasting insulin of 8 µIU/mL. Higher values generally suggest greater insulin resistance, but this number alone does not establish whether someone has insulin resistance. The first Note row states, 'Requires fasting measurements; cutoffs vary by population and insulin assay.' The second Note row states, 'Educational estimate for adults; not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.' Together, these notes mean the result needs appropriate fasting samples and clinical context rather than a universal normal/abnormal label.
Limitations
HOMA1-IR is an indirect estimate based on fasting glucose–insulin balance, not a direct measurement of insulin sensitivity. It assumes a reasonably stable fasting state; nonfasting samples, acute illness, and medications affecting glucose or insulin can distort interpretation. Results also depend on insulin secretion and laboratory assay methods, so there is no single cutoff that applies to every population. Insulin treatment or markedly impaired insulin production can make the estimate unreliable. This adult educational tool does not provide pediatric or pregnancy-specific interpretation, calculate HOMA2-IR, diagnose diabetes, or guide treatment.
Common questions
Does a HOMA1-IR result of 1.88 mean I have insulin resistance?+
Not by itself. The default glucose of 95 mg/dL and insulin of 8 µIU/mL produce 1.88, but interpretation depends on the population, insulin assay, and clinical context. This calculator does not assign a diagnostic cutoff.
Can I use glucose reported in mmol/L in this calculator?+
Not directly: this calculator expects mg/dL. Convert glucose from mmol/L to mg/dL by multiplying by approximately 18 before entering it. The equivalent HOMA1 formula using glucose in mmol/L divides the glucose–insulin product by 22.5 rather than 405.
Can I use insulin and glucose measurements taken after eating?+
No. HOMA1-IR requires fasting measurements because eating changes both glucose and insulin concentrations. Follow your laboratory's fasting instructions and use glucose and insulin collected together.
Is this result the same as HOMA2-IR?+
No. This tool uses the original HOMA1 formula, (fasting glucose × fasting insulin) / 405 with glucose in mg/dL. HOMA2 uses a more complex computer model, and its results should not be treated as interchangeable with HOMA1-IR.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
