About the Charitable Donation Tax Savings Estimate
The Charitable Donation Tax Savings Estimate calculates potential tax savings from the share of a donation you enter as creating an incremental deduction. It multiplies that amount by your applicable marginal tax rate and subtracts the estimated savings from the donation to show its after-tax cost. This tool does not apply deduction limits or determine whether your donation qualifies.
- Donation ($)
- The donation amount in dollars, with a default of $5,000.
- Share creating an incremental deduction (%)
- The percentage of the donation that you expect to create an additional deduction against taxable income, with a default of 100%.
- Applicable marginal tax rate (%)
- The tax rate expected to apply to the income reduced by the incremental deduction, entered as a percentage with a default of 24%.
Formula and method
I = D × (s / 100); T = I × (r / 100); C = D − T. With the default inputs: I = $5,000.00 × (100 / 100) = $5,000.00; T = $5,000.00 × (24 / 100) = $1,200.00; C = $5,000.00 − $1,200.00 = $3,800.00.
- DDonation amount in dollars.
- sShare creating an incremental deduction, entered as a percentage.
- rApplicable marginal tax rate, entered as a percentage.
- IIncremental deductible amount in dollars.
- TEstimated tax savings in dollars.
- CAfter-tax donation cost in dollars.
Convert the entered deduction share and marginal tax rate to decimals by dividing each by 100. Multiply the donation by the deduction share to calculate the incremental deductible amount, then multiply that amount by the marginal tax rate to estimate tax savings. Subtract those savings from the full donation amount to estimate its after-tax cost, without applying deduction limits.

- Incremental deductible amount$5,000.00
- Estimated tax savings$1,200.00
- After-tax donation cost$3,800.00
How to use the Charitable Donation Tax Savings Estimate
- 1Enter the donation amount in dollars; the default is $5,000.
- 2Enter the percentage expected to create an incremental deduction; use the default 100% only if the entire donation creates an additional deduction.
- 3Enter the applicable marginal tax rate; the default is 24%, not an average effective tax rate.
- 4Review the incremental deductible amount and estimated tax savings; the default inputs produce $5,000.00 and $1,200.00, respectively.
- 5Review the after-tax donation cost, which is $3,800.00 with the default inputs, and check the assumptions against the rules applicable to your tax return.
Reading your result
Incremental deductible amount is the portion of your donation treated as an additional deduction based solely on your entered share; it is $5,000.00 with the defaults. Estimated tax savings is the modeled reduction in tax from applying your entered marginal rate to that deduction; it is $1,200.00 with the defaults, not a guaranteed refund or tax credit. After-tax donation cost is the original donation less estimated tax savings; it is $3,800.00 with the defaults, although the donation itself remains $5,000.00.
Limitations
This is a simplified estimate, not a determination of deduction eligibility or tax advice. It assumes the entered share creates an incremental deduction and that one marginal tax rate applies to the entire amount. It does not automatically account for standard-versus-itemized deduction choices, income-based deduction limits, floors, caps, carryforwards, tax-bracket changes, alternative minimum tax, or interactions with other tax provisions. It also does not verify recipient eligibility, documentation, or noncash donation valuations. Federal and state rules may differ, and actual savings depend on the applicable tax year and your full return.
Common questions
Does the default 100% share mean every charitable donation is fully deductible?+
No. It tells this calculator to treat the entire $5,000.00 donation as creating an incremental deduction. You must determine whether that assumption fits your eligibility, deduction choices, and applicable tax rules.
What share should I enter if my donation creates no additional deduction?+
Enter 0%. The calculator will then show no incremental deductible amount or estimated tax savings, and the after-tax donation cost will equal the donation amount.
Why does a $5,000.00 incremental deduction produce only $1,200.00 in estimated savings?+
A deduction reduces taxable income rather than reducing tax dollar for dollar. At the default 24% marginal rate, the calculator multiplies $5,000.00 by 24% to estimate $1,200.00 in tax savings.
Will this calculator reduce my deduction if a charitable contribution limit applies?+
No. It uses the share you enter without applying deduction limits. If a limit affects the amount that creates an incremental deduction for the period you are estimating, reflect that in your entered share; the tool does not calculate carryforward benefits.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
