About the Caffeine Elimination Calculator
The Caffeine Elimination Calculator estimates how much caffeine remains after a specified time using exponential half-life decay. Enter an initial caffeine amount, elapsed time, and assumed half-life to model the remaining amount in milligrams. It provides a simplified estimate, not a measurement of caffeine in your body or a prediction of when you will sleep comfortably.
- Initial caffeine amount (mg)
- The starting caffeine amount to model, measured in milligrams (mg), with a default of 200 mg.
- Elapsed time (hours)
- The time since the modeled starting amount, measured in hours, with a default of 8 hours.
- Assumed half-life (hours)
- The assumed time for the remaining caffeine amount to halve, measured in hours, with a default of 5 hours.
Formula and method
C(t) = C₀ × (1/2)^(t/h). With the default inputs: C(8) = 200 × (1/2)^(8/5) ≈ 65.98 mg.
- C(t)Estimated caffeine remaining after elapsed time t, in milligrams.
- C₀Initial caffeine amount, in milligrams.
- tElapsed time, in hours.
- hAssumed caffeine half-life, in hours; must be greater than zero.
Divide elapsed time by the assumed half-life to find the number of half-lives elapsed. Raise one-half to that power, then multiply by the initial caffeine amount. With 200 mg, 8 hours, and a 5-hour half-life, the calculation is 200 × (1/2)^(8/5), giving an estimated 65.98 mg remaining when rounded to two decimal places.

- Elapsed time8 hours
- Assumed half-life5 hours
Results
- Estimated caffeine remaining65.98 mg
- NoteHalf-life varies widely with medications, pregnancy and individual metabolism.
How to use the Caffeine Elimination Calculator
- 1Enter the initial caffeine amount in milligrams; the default is 200 mg.
- 2Enter the elapsed time in hours; the default is 8 hours.
- 3Enter a positive assumed half-life in hours; the default is 5 hours.
- 4Calculate the estimate and read the caffeine remaining in milligrams.
- 5Review the half-life variability note before using the estimate to inform caffeine timing.
Reading your result
The “Estimated caffeine remaining” row reports the modeled amount left, not a blood concentration or a measure of alertness. With the default inputs, this is 65.98 mg. The “Note” row states: “Half-life varies widely with medications, pregnancy and individual metabolism.” This means the result depends on your half-life assumption and may differ substantially from your actual caffeine level.
Limitations
The model assumes the initial caffeine amount is available at the starting time, elimination follows a constant half-life, and no additional caffeine is consumed. It does not model absorption delays, repeated doses, active metabolites, or changing elimination rates. The default 5-hour half-life is an assumption, not a personalized measurement; medications, pregnancy, individual metabolism, smoking, and health conditions can affect it. Use a nonnegative initial amount and elapsed time, and a half-life greater than zero. Displaying two decimal places does not imply medical accuracy. The result cannot establish a safe caffeine intake, determine fitness for an activity, or guarantee that caffeine will not disrupt sleep.
Common questions
Why does the default calculation leave 65.98 mg rather than subtracting a fixed amount each hour?+
Half-life decay removes a fraction of the remaining caffeine over time, not a fixed number of milligrams per hour. With the defaults, 8 hours represents 8/5 half-lives, so the remaining amount is 200 × (1/2)^(8/5) ≈ 65.98 mg.
Is the default 5-hour caffeine half-life accurate for me?+
Not necessarily. It is a modeling assumption, and your actual half-life can differ because of medications, pregnancy, individual metabolism, and other factors. A clinician or pharmacist can help explain relevant medication or health considerations.
Can I use this calculator for several caffeinated drinks consumed at different times?+
A single calculation models one starting amount. To estimate several doses at a common endpoint, calculate each dose separately using its own elapsed time and the same assumed half-life, then add the remaining amounts. Combining all doses under one elapsed time would misrepresent their timing.
Does a low caffeine-remaining estimate mean I will be able to sleep?+
No. Sleep effects depend on caffeine sensitivity, sleep timing, and other factors that this calculator does not measure. There is no personalized sleep-safe threshold built into the result.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
