About the Add Business Days to a Date

The Add Business Days to a Date calculator finds a future date by counting Monday through Friday and skipping Saturdays and Sundays. Starting from the default date of 2026-10-23, adding 10 business days gives Fri, November 6, 2026. This tool excludes weekends but does not exclude holidays.

Start date
The calendar date from which counting begins, entered as a date rather than a duration; the default is 2026-10-23.
Business days to add
The number of Monday-through-Friday days to count after the start date, measured in whole business days; the default is 10.

Formula and method

R = S + k* calendar days, where k* = min{k ∈ ℤ≥0 : Σ(i=1 to k) b(S + i calendar days) = N}; b(d) = 1 if d is Monday–Friday and 0 otherwise. For S = 2026-10-23 and N = 10, k* = 14, so R = 2026-11-06.
  • SThe start date, 2026-10-23 in the worked example.
  • NThe whole number of business days to add, 10 in the worked example.
  • dA calendar date being tested to determine whether it is a weekday.
  • b(d)A counting function that returns 1 for Monday through Friday and 0 for Saturday or Sunday, without checking holidays.
  • iThe calendar-day offset after the start date used in the sum.
  • kA candidate nonnegative whole number of calendar days to advance.
  • k*The smallest calendar-day offset that accumulates exactly N business days; it is 14 in the worked example.
  • RThe resulting date after adding the requested business days.

Begin with the start date and a business-day count of zero. Advance one calendar day at a time, increasing the count only when the new date is Monday through Friday, and stop when the count reaches the requested total. The start date itself is not counted. From Friday, October 23, 2026, skip October 24–25, count October 26–30 as business days 1–5, skip October 31 and November 1, then count November 2–6 as business days 6–10.

Reading your result

The Resulting date row shows the destination date with its weekday: Fri, November 6, 2026. The ISO format row shows the same date in YYYY-MM-DD form: 2026-11-06. The Note row states “Weekends skipped; holidays not excluded,” meaning every Monday through Friday counts even if it is a public holiday or workplace closure.

Limitations

This calculation assumes a Monday-through-Friday workweek and whole, nonnegative business-day additions. It does not account for public holidays, company closures, alternative weekend schedules, partial workdays, or time-of-day cutoff rules. The result is a calendar date, not an elapsed-hours duration or a guaranteed legal, banking, shipping, or contractual deadline; check any applicable rules separately.

Common questions

Does October 23, 2026 count as the first of the 10 business days?+

No. The start date is excluded from the count. Because October 24–25 is a weekend, Monday, October 26 is the first counted business day.

Why do 10 business days after 2026-10-23 land on November 6 rather than 10 calendar days later?+

The calculation skips October 24–25 and October 31–November 1. Those four weekend dates extend the interval to 14 calendar days, producing 2026-11-06.

Will a weekday holiday move the resulting date later?+

No. This calculator counts weekday holidays as business days. If your schedule excludes holidays, you must account for them separately.

What happens if the start date is a Saturday or Sunday?+

The start date is still excluded, and weekend dates do not increase the count. For a positive addition, counting begins on the next Monday.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
