About the Wallpaper Roll Calculator
The Wallpaper Roll Calculator estimates the number of full-height drops and rolls needed to cover a wall with plain wallpaper that has no pattern repeat. It uses wall dimensions and roll dimensions to count strips rather than comparing surface areas alone. With the default dimensions, it calculates 19 drops and a requirement of 5 rolls.
- Wall width (m)
- The horizontal width of the wall to cover, measured in metres, with a default of 10 m.
- Wall height (m)
- The height each wallpaper drop must cover, measured in metres, with a default of 2.5 m.
- Roll width (m)
- The width of one wallpaper roll and therefore one drop, measured in metres, with a default of 0.53 m.
- Roll length (m)
- The usable length of wallpaper on each roll, measured in metres, with a default of 10 m.
Formula and method
D = ceil(W / w); P = floor(L / H); R = ceil(D / P), provided P >= 1. With the defaults: D = ceil(10 / 0.53) = 19 drops; P = floor(10 / 2.5) = 4 drops per roll; R = ceil(19 / 4) = 5 rolls.
- WWall width in metres.
- HWall height in metres.
- wRoll width in metres.
- LRoll length in metres.
- DNumber of full-height drops required across the wall.
- PNumber of complete wall-height drops obtainable from each roll.
- RWhole rolls required.
- ceil(x)Round x up to the nearest whole number.
- floor(x)Round x down to the nearest whole number.
Divide wall width by roll width and round up so the final partial-width strip is counted as a drop. Divide roll length by wall height and round down because a short remainder cannot supply a full-height drop. Finally, divide required drops by drops per roll and round up to whole rolls. All dimensions must be positive; if a roll is shorter than the wall height, this full-height-drop method cannot produce a valid roll count.

How to use the Wallpaper Roll Calculator
- 1Measure the wall width and height in metres and enter them in the wall dimension fields.
- 2Check the wallpaper label and enter the roll width and roll length in metres.
- 3Confirm that the wallpaper is plain with no pattern repeat, since the calculation makes no pattern-matching allowance.
- 4Run the calculation; the default inputs of 10 m, 2.5 m, 0.53 m and 10 m produce 19 required drops, 4 drops per roll and 5 rolls.
- 5Review the result against your trimming, waste and spare-material needs before buying.
Reading your result
Drops required is the number of vertical strips needed to span the wall, including a final strip that may be trimmed narrower; the default result is 19. Drops per roll is the number of complete wall-height strips available from one roll; the default result is 4. Rolls required is the purchase quantity rounded up to whole rolls; the default result is 5. Those 5 rolls can supply 20 drops under the stated assumptions, leaving capacity for one extra drop.
Limitations
This is a theoretical estimate for vertically hung, plain wallpaper on a rectangular wall. It assumes each cut drop equals the entered wall height, with no extra length for top and bottom trimming, pattern matching, damaged material or cutting errors. The default 4 drops per roll uses the full 10 m roll length exactly, so adding a trimming allowance can reduce the yield and increase the roll count. Doors and windows are not deducted, and offcuts are not reused to cover shorter sections. Actual usable roll dimensions, uneven walls and installation requirements may affect the purchase quantity.
Common questions
Why do the default inputs require 5 rolls?+
A 10 m wall needs ceil(10 / 0.53) = 19 drops. Each 10 m roll supplies floor(10 / 2.5) = 4 full-height drops, so ceil(19 / 4) = 5 rolls are required.
Does the calculator include extra length for trimming each drop?+
No. It cuts each drop at the entered wall height. To estimate with a trimming allowance, enter the total intended cut length in the Wall height (m) field, following the wallpaper manufacturer's guidance.
Can I use this calculator for wallpaper with a pattern repeat?+
Not reliably. Pattern matching can require longer cuts and reduce the number of drops per roll; this calculator does not accept repeat length or match type.
Should I subtract doors and windows from the wall width?+
Generally, keep the full wall width for this simple drop-count estimate. Openings often still need wallpaper above or below them, and subtracting their widths can undercount the required strips; savings depend on the cutting layout.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
