About the Roofing Calculator

This calculator estimates the total surface area of a sloped roof, the number of roofing squares needed, and the required shingle bundles based on building footprint area and pitch. It is designed for homeowners, contractors, and estimators planning material orders for standard asphalt shingle projects.

Footprint area
The horizontal base area covered by the roof structure, measured in square feet (ft²). Sensible range: 100 to 10,000 ft².
Pitch (rise per 12)
The vertical rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run (e.g., a 6:12 pitch is entered as 6). Sensible range: 0 to 24.

Formula and method

Roof Area = Footprint Area × √(1 + (Pitch / 12)²)
Squares = Roof Area / 100
Bundles = ceil(Squares × 3 × 1.10)
  • Roof AreaTrue surface area of the pitched roof in square feet
  • Footprint AreaHorizontal plane area under the roof in square feet
  • PitchVertical rise in inches per 12 inches of horizontal run
  • SquaresRoofing unit equivalent to 100 square feet of roof surface
  • BundlesTotal bundles of shingles needed, assuming standard 3 bundles per square plus a 10% allowance for waste

The tool calculates true surface area by multiplying the horizontal footprint by a pitch multiplier derived from the Pythagorean theorem, √(1 + (Pitch / 12)²). Roofing squares are determined by dividing the calculated roof area by 100 and rounding to one decimal place. Total bundle count assumes standard 3-tab or architectural shingles (3 bundles per square) with an added 10% waste factor, rounded up to the nearest whole bundle.

How to use the Roofing Calculator

  1. 1Divide the pitch value by 12, square the result, add 1, and take the square root to find the roof pitch multiplier.
  2. 2Multiply the horizontal footprint area by the pitch multiplier to determine total sloped roof area in square feet.
  3. 3Divide the total roof area by 100 to calculate the number of roofing squares.
  4. 4Multiply roofing squares by 3 bundles per square and 1.10 for waste, then round up to the next whole integer to get total bundles.

Reading your result

Review the 'Roof area' to understand total surface coverage and 'Squares' when buying roll underlayment, ice-and-water shield, or flashing. Use the 'Bundles' result to order packages of asphalt shingles, which already includes a standard 10% waste buffer for ridge caps, starter strips, and valley cuts.

Limitations

This calculation assumes a uniform pitch across the entire structure and does not differentiate between simple gable, hip, or complex multi-pitch roof geometries. It also does not explicitly add overhangs unless you include them directly in the footprint area, nor does it adjust waste percentages for high-complexity roofs with numerous dormers and valleys.

Common questions

What is a roofing square?+

A roofing square is a standard unit of measurement in construction equal to 100 square feet of roof surface area.

Why does the bundle calculation add 10%?+

The 10% margin accounts for cutting waste along valleys, hips, rakes, and starter courses, as well as minor installation errors and shingle breakage during transit.

How do I account for roof overhangs (eaves and rakes)?+

To include overhangs, calculate the footprint area using the outer dimensions of the roof edges rather than the exterior wall dimensions of the house.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
