Mulch volume and bags.
About the Mulch Calculator
This calculator determines the total volume of mulch needed to cover a landscape bed based on surface area and desired mulch depth. It translates the volume into cubic feet, bulk cubic yards, and the count of standard 2-cubic-foot bags. Gardeners, landscapers, and homeowners use these figures to purchase bulk material or retail bagged mulch accurately.
- Area
- The total surface area of the planting bed or garden to cover, measured in square feet (ft²). Typically ranges from 10 to 10,000 ft².
- Depth
- The target mulch thickness, measured in inches (in). Typically ranges from 1 to 4 inches for weed suppression and moisture retention.
Formula and method
Cubic Feet = Area × Depth / 12 Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet / 27 2 ft³ Bags = ceil(Cubic Feet / 2)
- AreaBed coverage area in square feet
- DepthLayer thickness in inches
- ceilCeiling function that rounds up to the nearest whole integer
The tool converts the depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12, then multiplies by the surface area to calculate volume in cubic feet. Cubic yards are derived by dividing total cubic feet by 27 (the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard). The bag count divides the cubic footage by 2 and rounds up to the next whole bag using the ceiling function.

How to use the Mulch Calculator
- 1Multiply surface area in square feet by the desired layer depth in inches.
- 2Divide that product by 12 to convert depth to feet and obtain the volume in cubic feet.
- 3Divide the cubic feet by 27 to obtain the volume in bulk cubic yards.
- 4Divide the cubic feet by 2 and round up to the nearest whole number to determine the required count of 2 ft³ bags.
Reading your result
Use the cubic yards figure if you plan to order bulk mulch delivered by the truckload, which is usually sold in half or whole yards. Use the 2 ft³ bags count when purchasing individual bagged mulch from home improvement centers or nurseries. The cubic feet figure serves as the baseline measurement for comparing prices or non-standard bag sizes.
Limitations
The calculation assumes a uniform depth across a completely flat bed and does not account for irregular terrain or existing vegetation. It does not factor in material settling over time or compaction during spreading. It also specifically assumes retail bags hold exactly 2 cubic feet rather than 1.5 or 3 cubic feet.
Common questions
What is the recommended mulch depth for garden beds?+
A depth of 2 to 3 inches is generally standard for weed prevention and soil moisture retention. Depths exceeding 3 to 4 inches can suffocate shallow plant roots and prevent water from reaching the soil.
When is it more cost-effective to buy bulk cubic yards instead of bags?+
Bulk delivery generally becomes more economical when needing more than 1 to 2 cubic yards (equivalent to 14 to 27 two-cubic-foot bags), although bulk orders often incur an additional delivery fee.
How do I calculate the area of an irregularly shaped flower bed?+
Break the bed into approximate geometric sections such as rectangles (length × width) and circles (π × radius²), calculate the square footage of each section, and sum them together before entering the total area.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
