About the Velocity Calculator

The Velocity Calculator divides distance in meters by elapsed time in seconds to calculate a rate of motion in m/s. It also converts the result to km/h and mph. With the default distance of 100 m and time of 9.58 s, it displays 10.438 m/s, 37.578 km/h, and 23.35 mph.

Distance (m)
The distance traveled, measured in meters (m), defaults to 100.
Time (s)
The elapsed time for traveling that distance, measured in seconds (s), defaults to 9.58.

Formula and method

v = d / t; v_kmh = v × 3.6; v_mph = v × (3600 / 1609.344). With the default inputs: v = 100 / 9.58 ≈ 10.438 m/s; v_kmh ≈ 37.578 km/h; v_mph ≈ 23.35 mph.
  • dDistance traveled in meters.
  • tElapsed time in seconds; it must be greater than zero.
  • vDistance divided by time, expressed in meters per second.
  • v_kmhThe same rate expressed in kilometers per hour.
  • v_mphThe same rate expressed in miles per hour.

Divide the distance by the elapsed time to obtain the average rate in m/s. Convert the unrounded result to km/h by multiplying by 3.6 and to mph by multiplying by 3600/1609.344. Round the displayed results to three decimal places for m/s and km/h and two decimal places for mph, as in the worked example.

How to use the Velocity Calculator

  1. 1Enter the distance traveled in Distance (m), or keep the default of 100.
  2. 2Enter the elapsed time in Time (s), or keep the default of 9.58.
  3. 3Check that the distance is nonnegative and the time is greater than zero, with both inputs in the stated units.
  4. 4Read the calculated Velocity output: the default inputs give 10.438 m/s.
  5. 5Read the converted outputs for the same motion: In km/h = 37.578 and In mph = 23.35.

Reading your result

The Velocity row reports distance traveled per second, averaged over the entered time; for the defaults, this is 10.438 m/s. The In km/h row expresses the same average rate as 37.578 kilometers per hour, and the In mph row expresses it as 23.35 miles per hour. These are unit conversions of one result, not separate measurements.

Limitations

Despite the calculator's name, total distance divided by time gives average speed, not vector velocity. Average velocity requires displacement and direction. The result does not reveal instantaneous speed, acceleration, or changes in direction, and it does not imply that motion was constant. Time must be positive, distance should be nonnegative, and measurement uncertainty in either input affects the result. Displayed decimal places do not guarantee equivalent measurement precision.

Common questions

Why does 100 m over 9.58 s give 10.438 m/s?+

Dividing 100 by 9.58 gives approximately 10.438413 m/s, which rounds to the displayed 10.438 m/s.

How are the km/h and mph outputs calculated?+

The calculator converts the unrounded m/s result using 3.6 kilometers per hour per meter per second and 3600/1609.344 miles per hour per meter per second. With the default inputs, these round to 37.578 km/h and 23.35 mph.

Does this calculator give my velocity at the finish?+

No. It gives the average rate over the entire entered distance and time. Finding velocity at the finish requires additional motion data near that instant.

Should I enter total distance or displacement?+

This tool asks for total distance traveled, so its result is average speed. Average velocity instead uses net displacement divided by elapsed time and includes direction, which this calculator does not capture.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
