About the Speed, Distance, Time
The Speed, Distance, Time calculator finds average speed from a distance in kilometers and a duration entered as hours and minutes. It also converts that speed to miles per hour and reports pace in minutes per kilometer. With the default distance of 42.195 km and time of 2 hours 1 minute, it shows 20.923 km/h, 13.001 mph, and 2.87 min/km.
- Distance (km)
- The total distance traveled in kilometers, with a default of 42.195 km.
- Hours
- The hours component of the total duration, with a default of 2 hours.
- Minutes
- The additional minutes component of the total duration, with a default of 1 minute.
Formula and method
t = h + m/60; v = d/t; u = v/1.609344; p = (60h + m)/d = 60/v.
- dDistance traveled in kilometers.
- hEntered hours component.
- mEntered minutes component.
- tTotal duration in hours.
- vAverage speed in kilometers per hour.
- uAverage speed in miles per hour, using 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers.
- pAverage pace in minutes per kilometer.
Convert the minutes to hours and add them to the entered hours, then divide distance by the total time. For the defaults, t = 2 + 1/60 hours and v = 42.195/(2 + 1/60) = 20.923 km/h when rounded. Convert the unrounded speed to mph to obtain 13.001, and divide the total 121 minutes by 42.195 km to obtain a pace of 2.87 min/km. Round only the final outputs.

Inputs
- Distance42.195 km
- Hours2
- Minutes1
Results
- Speed20.923 km/h
- In mph13.001
- Pace per km2.87 min/km
How to use the Speed, Distance, Time
- 1Enter the distance traveled in Distance (km); keep 42.195 to follow the default example.
- 2Enter the hours component in Hours; the default is 2.
- 3Enter the additional minutes in Minutes; the default is 1, making the total duration 2 hours 1 minute.
- 4Read the speed results: the default inputs produce 20.923 km/h and 13.001 mph.
- 5Read Pace per km: the default result is 2.87 min/km, the average time taken to cover each kilometer.
Reading your result
Speed reports average kilometers traveled per hour: 20.923 km/h for the defaults. In mph expresses the same average speed in miles per hour: 13.001. Pace per km reports average minutes needed for one kilometer: 2.87 min/km. Higher speed means faster travel, while lower pace means faster travel. Pace is displayed in decimal minutes, not minutes and seconds.
Limitations
The calculation describes an average over the entered distance and duration, not instantaneous speed or changes along the route. Use a positive distance and positive total time to obtain meaningful values for all outputs; zero time makes speed undefined, and zero distance makes pace undefined. Negative inputs are not physically meaningful here. Including stops produces an elapsed-time average, while excluding them produces a moving-time average. Accuracy depends on the distance and time measurements, and displayed results are rounded.
Common questions
Does this Speed, Distance, Time calculator also solve for distance or time?+
This version takes distance, hours, and minutes as inputs and calculates speed, its mph equivalent, and pace per kilometer; it does not take speed as an input to solve for another quantity.
How are the default 2 hours and 1 minute combined?+
They are added as separate time components: 2 + 1/60 hours, or 121 minutes. The duration is not interpreted as 2.1 hours.
Does a pace of 2.87 min/km mean 2 minutes 87 seconds?+
No. It means 2.87 decimal minutes per kilometer. Multiply the fractional minute by 60 to express it in seconds.
Should I include rest stops in Hours and Minutes?+
Include them if you want average speed and pace for the entire elapsed trip. Exclude them if you want averages for moving time only, and use the same time basis when comparing results.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
