About the Vehicle Out-the-Door Price Calculator

The Vehicle Out-the-Door Price Calculator estimates the net purchase amount after a tax-eligible trade-in, including taxable dealer fees, sales tax, and untaxed registration fees. It treats the trade-in credit as a reduction to both the taxable purchase amount and the amount you owe, while adding registration fees only after tax is calculated.

Vehicle price ($)
The vehicle's purchase price in dollars before dealer fees, trade-in credit, sales tax, and registration fees; the default is $32,000.
Taxable dealer fees ($)
Dealer charges in dollars that are included in the sales-tax base; the default is $500.
Tax-eligible trade-in credit ($)
The trade-in credit in dollars applied to reduce both the taxable purchase amount and the purchase balance; the default is $8,000.
Sales tax rate (%)
The applicable sales tax percentage charged on the purchase amount after the eligible trade-in credit; the default is 7%.
Untaxed registration fees ($)
Registration charges in dollars added to the purchase total without sales tax; the default is $350.

Formula and method

B = P + D − C; S = B × (r / 100); N = P + D − C + S + R. With the default inputs: B = $32,000 + $500 − $8,000 = $24,500; S = $24,500 × (7 / 100) = $1,715.00; N = $24,500 + $1,715 + $350 = $26,565.00.
  • PVehicle price in dollars.
  • DTaxable dealer fees in dollars.
  • CTax-eligible trade-in credit in dollars.
  • rSales tax rate entered as a percentage, such as 7 for 7%.
  • RUntaxed registration fees in dollars.
  • BTaxable purchase amount after subtracting the eligible trade-in credit, in dollars.
  • SEstimated sales tax in dollars.
  • NEstimated net purchase amount after trade-in, including sales tax and untaxed registration fees, in dollars.

Add the vehicle price and taxable dealer fees, then subtract the tax-eligible trade-in credit to find the taxable amount. Convert the sales tax percentage to a decimal and multiply it by that amount. Add the resulting tax and untaxed registration fees to the purchase amount after trade-in, displaying the monetary results to two decimal places.

How to use the Vehicle Out-the-Door Price Calculator

  1. 1Enter the vehicle price before taxes and fees; the default is $32,000.
  2. 2Enter taxable dealer fees separately from registration charges; the default taxable dealer fees are $500.
  3. 3Enter the trade-in credit eligible to reduce the sales-tax base; the default is $8,000.
  4. 4Enter the applicable sales tax rate and untaxed registration fees; the defaults are 7% and $350.
  5. 5Review the sales tax and net amount after trade-in, then compare the estimate with the dealer's itemized quote.

Reading your result

The Sales tax row shows tax on the vehicle price plus taxable dealer fees minus the eligible trade-in credit; with the defaults, it is $1,715.00. The Net amount after trade-in row shows the remaining purchase amount including that tax and untaxed registration fees; with the defaults, it is $26,565.00. The trade-in has already been deducted from this net amount, so do not subtract it again. This output is not a monthly payment or necessarily the amount you will finance.

Limitations

This estimate assumes the entire entered trade-in credit reduces the sales-tax base, all entered dealer fees are taxable, and all entered registration fees are untaxed. Actual rules vary by jurisdiction and may include trade-in caps, different tax bases, or additional charges. The calculator does not separately account for an outstanding trade-in loan, negative equity, rebates, down payments, financing charges, insurance, or optional products. It assumes the trade-in credit does not exceed the vehicle price plus taxable dealer fees; larger credits require treatment not established by this example. Confirm tax eligibility, fee classifications, and the final total with the dealer and the relevant taxing or motor-vehicle authority.

Common questions

Does the trade-in credit reduce both sales tax and the purchase balance?+

Yes. This tool subtracts the $8,000 default credit from the $32,000 vehicle price plus $500 in taxable dealer fees, leaving $24,500 subject to tax. That same $24,500 is the purchase balance before sales tax and registration fees are added.

Why aren't registration fees included when calculating sales tax?+

This calculator specifically treats the registration input as untaxed. The default $350 is added after the $1,715.00 sales tax is calculated, so it increases the net amount but not the tax.

Can I use this calculation if my jurisdiction does not allow a trade-in tax credit?+

Not directly for the full net purchase amount. This tool uses one trade-in input to reduce both the tax base and the purchase balance; it cannot separately represent a trade-in that lowers what you owe without lowering taxable value.

Is the $26,565.00 default net amount the amount of my auto loan?+

Not necessarily. It is the estimated purchase amount after the eligible trade-in, tax, and registration fees. A down payment, existing trade-in loan payoff, financed add-ons, or lender charges can change the amount financed.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
