About the Vehicle Declining Value Calculator

The Vehicle Declining Value Calculator projects a vehicle’s future value by applying a constant annual depreciation percentage to its remaining value. It shows both the projected value after your holding period and the total dollar value lost. With the default current value of $35,000, annual depreciation of 15%, and holding period of 5 years, the projected value is $15,529.69 and the value lost is $19,470.31.

Current value ($)
The vehicle’s estimated value today in dollars, used as the starting amount; the default is $35,000.
Annual depreciation (%)
The percentage of the vehicle’s remaining value lost each year, expressed as an annual rate; the default is 15%.
Holding period (years)
The time from today to the projected valuation date, measured in years; the default is 5 years.

Formula and method

V = C × (1 − d/100)^t; L = C − V. With the defaults: V = 35000 × (1 − 15/100)^5 = $15,529.69; L = 35000 − V = $19,470.31, rounded to cents.
  • CCurrent vehicle value in dollars.
  • dAnnual depreciation rate entered as a percentage, such as 15 for 15%.
  • tHolding period in years.
  • VProjected vehicle value in dollars at the end of the holding period.
  • LTotal value lost in dollars over the holding period.

Convert the annual depreciation percentage to a decimal and subtract it from 1 to obtain the annual retention factor. Raise that factor to the holding period and multiply by the current value. Subtract the resulting projected value from the current value to find total value lost, keeping full precision during calculation and rounding the displayed dollar outputs to cents.

How to use the Vehicle Declining Value Calculator

  1. 1Enter the vehicle’s estimated current value in dollars, using $35,000 for the default example.
  2. 2Enter the expected annual depreciation percentage, using 15% for the default example.
  3. 3Enter the holding period in years, using 5 years for the default example.
  4. 4Run the calculation to see the projected value and total value lost.
  5. 5Review the default results of $15,529.69 projected value and $19,470.31 value lost, then adjust the inputs to explore your own assumptions.

Reading your result

Projected value is the estimated amount the vehicle will be worth at the end of the holding period: $15,529.69 with the default inputs. Value lost is the difference between its current value and projected value: $19,470.31 with the defaults. This loss covers the full holding period, not a single year, and does not include operating costs or financing expenses.

Limitations

The model assumes a constant percentage loss each year, not a constant dollar loss. Actual vehicle depreciation varies with age, make, model, mileage, condition, accident history, maintenance, and market demand. The estimate is not an appraisal or guaranteed resale offer, and it excludes taxes, selling fees, loan balances, interest, insurance, fuel, and maintenance. It is not a tax-depreciation calculation. For a conventional declining-value projection, use a nonnegative current value and holding period and a depreciation rate between 0% and 100%.

Common questions

Does 15% annual depreciation mean subtracting 15% of the starting vehicle value every year?+

No. Each year’s depreciation applies to the remaining value, so the vehicle retains 85% of the previous year’s value. With $35,000 over 5 years, this produces a projected value of $15,529.69 rather than a straight-line reduction.

Should I enter the vehicle’s purchase price or its current resale value?+

For a projection starting today, enter its estimated current resale value. Use the purchase price only if it reasonably represents the vehicle’s value at the start of the period you are modeling.

How should I choose the annual vehicle depreciation percentage?+

Use an estimate informed by resale trends for vehicles of the same make, model, age, mileage, and condition. The default 15% is an assumption, not a forecast for every vehicle; compare several plausible rates to understand how sensitive your projection is.

Does the projected vehicle value show my equity or trade-in payout?+

No. It estimates vehicle value before any outstanding loan balance, selling fees, or dealer adjustments. Estimating equity requires subtracting the loan payoff amount from the vehicle’s expected sale or trade-in value.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
