About the Time Zone Difference

The Time Zone Difference calculator converts a 24-hour clock time from one fixed UTC offset to another. It shows the converted time, whether it falls on the same or a different day, and the difference between the two offsets.

Hour (0-23)
The hour of the source time on a 24-hour clock, from 0 through 23, with a default of 12.
Minute
The minute within the source hour, from 0 through 59, with a default of 0.
From UTC offset (hours)
The source time's signed difference from UTC in hours, with a default of -5.
To UTC offset (hours)
The destination time's signed difference from UTC in hours, with a default of 1.

Formula and method

Δ = O_to − O_from; T = 60H + M + 60Δ; D = floor(T / 1440); R = T − 1440D; H_out = floor(R / 60); M_out = R − 60H_out. With the default inputs: Δ = 1 − (−5) = 6 hours; T = 60 × 12 + 0 + 60 × 6 = 1080 minutes; D = 0; R = 1080; H_out = 18; M_out = 0. Converted time = 18:00; Day shift = Same day; Offset difference = 6 hours.
  • HSource hour on the 24-hour clock.
  • MSource minute within the hour.
  • O_fromSource UTC offset in hours.
  • O_toDestination UTC offset in hours.
  • ΔDestination offset minus source offset, in hours.
  • TConverted total minutes measured from midnight of the source day, before day wrapping.
  • DDay shift relative to the source day; negative means earlier, zero means the same day, and positive means later.
  • RMinutes since midnight on the destination day, after day wrapping.
  • H_outConverted hour on the 24-hour clock.
  • M_outConverted minute within the hour.

Subtract the source UTC offset from the destination UTC offset, then add that difference to the source time in minutes. Divide the resulting total by 1440 minutes per day and round down to determine the day shift. Subtract those whole days to obtain the destination clock time, then display its hour and minute as HH:MM.

How to use the Time Zone Difference

  1. 1Enter the source Hour (0-23) and Minute; for the default example, use 12 and 0.
  2. 2Enter the From UTC offset (hours); use -5 for the default example.
  3. 3Enter the To UTC offset (hours); use 1 for the default example.
  4. 4Read the converted clock time and day shift: the default inputs give 18:00 and Same day.
  5. 5Check the offset difference: 6 hours means the destination clock is six hours ahead of the source clock.

Reading your result

Converted time is the destination's 24-hour clock reading, displayed as HH:MM. Day shift indicates the destination day relative to the source day, not a specific calendar date. Offset difference is the destination UTC offset minus the source UTC offset: positive means ahead and negative means behind. For the default inputs, 18:00 is the destination time, Same day means no day boundary was crossed, and 6 hours means the destination is ahead.

Limitations

This tool converts fixed UTC offsets, not named geographic time zones. It does not automatically apply daylight saving time, historical offset changes, or location-specific rules; enter the offsets that apply at the intended instant. Because no date is supplied, the tool reports only a relative day shift. Fractional-hour offsets require decimal input support and must be entered as hours, not as an HH:MM string. The calculation assumes 1440-minute days and does not account for leap seconds.

Common questions

Why does converting from UTC-5 to UTC+1 add six hours?+

The calculator subtracts the source offset from the destination offset: 1 − (−5) = 6 hours. Adding six hours to 12:00 gives 18:00 on the same day.

Does entering a UTC offset identify a city or handle daylight saving time?+

No. A UTC offset specifies only a fixed difference from UTC. You must look up and enter the source and destination offsets that apply at the time you want to convert.

What happens when the converted time crosses midnight?+

The clock time wraps into the 00:00–23:59 range, and Day shift reports whether the destination day is earlier or later than the source day. The day calculation rounds down so that conversions before the source day's midnight are handled correctly.

Does a negative UTC offset mean I should always subtract time?+

No. The conversion depends on the difference between both offsets, not the sign of either offset alone. With From UTC offset set to -5 and To UTC offset set to 1, the difference is positive, so the calculator adds six hours.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
