About the Soil Amendment Calculator
The Soil Amendment Calculator calculates the mass of amendment needed for a garden area using a labeled application rate in kilograms per square metre. With the default garden area of 25 m² and application rate of 2 kg/m², it returns 50 kg of amendment.

Formula and method
M = A × R = 25 m² × 2 kg/m² = 50 kg

Multiply the garden area by the application rate. The square-metre units cancel, leaving the required amendment mass in kilograms; no allowance for waste or package-size rounding is added.

Reading your result
The Result row shows the total amendment mass in kilograms for the entire entered garden area, not the amount per square metre. A result of 50 kg means that applying 2 kg/m² across 25 m² requires 50 kg of amendment.
Limitations
This calculator assumes a uniform application rate across the entire area. It does not determine whether an amendment is needed or whether the entered rate is suitable for your soil, plants, or product; use soil-test recommendations and product directions to select the rate. It does not account for soil depth, amendment density, moisture differences, handling losses, or bag sizes. Rates stated by volume, incorporation depth, or nutrient content must be converted appropriately before use. Negative areas or rates are not physically meaningful.
Common questions
Does the calculator tell me which soil amendment or application rate to use?+
No. It only calculates mass from the area and rate you provide. Choose the amendment and rate using product directions and, where appropriate, a soil test.
Can I enter a rate given in grams per square metre?+
Convert it to kilograms per square metre first by dividing the grams-per-square-metre value by 1,000, then enter the converted rate.
Can this calculator work from a recommended layer thickness for compost?+
Not directly. A layer thickness and area determine volume, whereas this tool requires a mass-based rate. You need the amendment's bulk density to convert a volume-based recommendation to kg/m².
How do I turn the 50 kg result into a number of bags to buy?+
Divide 50 kg by the net mass in kilograms printed on each bag, then round up to a whole number of bags. Any extra purchased material is surplus, not a reason to exceed the labeled application rate.
