About the Sod Piece Calculator
The Sod Piece Calculator estimates how many sod pieces you need to cover a lawn, using the lawn area, coverage per piece, and an allowance for waste. It adds the waste allowance before rounding up to a whole number of pieces so you can plan your order.
- Lawn area (m²)
- The total ground area to cover with sod, measured in square metres, with a default of 100 m².
- Coverage per piece (m²)
- The area covered by one sod piece, measured in square metres per piece, with a default of 0.5 m².
- Waste (%)
- The extra sod allowance for cutting, trimming, and unusable pieces, expressed as a percentage of the lawn area, with a default of 5%.
Formula and method
N = ceil(A × (1 + W / 100) / C); with the default inputs: N = ceil(100 × (1 + 5 / 100) / 0.5) = ceil(210) = 210 pieces.
- NThe estimated number of whole sod pieces to order.
- ALawn area in square metres.
- CCoverage per sod piece in square metres per piece.
- WWaste allowance entered as a percentage.
- ceilThe ceiling operation, which rounds a fractional result up to the next whole number and leaves an integer unchanged.
Multiply the lawn area by one plus the waste percentage divided by 100, then divide that adjusted area by the coverage per piece. Round up only at the end. For the default inputs, 100 m² with 5% waste gives 105 m² of planned coverage; dividing by 0.5 m² per piece gives 210 pieces.

How to use the Sod Piece Calculator
- 1Measure the lawn area to be sodded, excluding paths, planting beds, and other uncovered spaces, and enter it in Lawn area (m²).
- 2Check the supplier’s coverage for one sod piece and enter it in Coverage per piece (m²).
- 3Enter a Waste (%) allowance appropriate for the lawn’s edges, curves, and expected trimming.
- 4Review the calculated whole-piece requirement; the default inputs of 100 m², 0.5 m² per piece, and 5% waste produce 210 pieces.
- 5Confirm the supplier’s ordering increments before purchasing, since bundles or pallets may require a larger order.
Reading your result
The result row shows the estimated total number of sod pieces, including the waste allowance and rounding up to whole pieces. A result of 210 pieces means ordering 210 pieces at the stated coverage of 0.5 m² each provides 105 m² of nominal coverage for the 100 m² lawn, including the 5% allowance.
Limitations
The estimate assumes all sod pieces have the same usable coverage and that the measured lawn area is accurate. Waste is added as a percentage of the lawn area, not treated as a percentage lost from the final order. Actual requirements depend on lawn shape, cutting layout, damaged pieces, and installation practices; the default 5% is not a guarantee of sufficient waste allowance. Coverage per piece must be greater than zero, and lawn area and waste must be nonnegative. The calculator does not account for supplier bundle sizes, costs, soil preparation, or sod establishment.
Common questions
Does the 210-piece result already include the 5% waste allowance?+
Yes. The 100 m² lawn requires 200 pieces at 0.5 m² per piece before waste; the 5% allowance adds 10 pieces, giving 210 pieces total.
What should I enter if my supplier lists sod piece dimensions instead of coverage?+
For a rectangular piece, convert its length and width to metres and multiply them to obtain square metres per piece. Use the supplier’s stated usable coverage if it differs from the nominal dimensions.
Is 5% waste enough for a lawn with curves and planting beds?+
Not necessarily. Curved boundaries, narrow strips, and numerous obstacles can require more trimming; choose an allowance based on the layout and advice from your supplier or installer.
Can I use the piece count directly when sod is sold by the pallet?+
Only if the supplier allows individual-piece orders. Otherwise, divide the calculated piece count by the supplier’s pieces per pallet and round up to a whole pallet.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
