About the Scientific Notation Calculator

This calculator converts any standard numerical value into scientific exponential notation. It is designed for students, scientists, and engineers who need to express very large or very small numbers in standardized compact forms.

Number
Any positive or negative decimal or integer to convert into exponential notation.

Formula and method

x = m × 10^e (represented as m e±e or m E±e)
  • xThe input number
  • mThe significand (mantissa), where 1 ≤ |m| < 10
  • eThe integer exponent representing the power of 10

The tool parses the input number using JavaScript's built-in numeric parsing. It then applies toExponential(6) to compute the Scientific result rounded to six decimal places, and toExponential() converted to uppercase to produce the full-precision E-notation string.

Worked example

These are the calculator's starting values and the results it actually produces for them.

How to use the Scientific Notation Calculator

  1. 1Enter a real number into the Number field.
  2. 2The tool parses the value into a standard floating-point number.
  3. 3For the Scientific output, the value is formatted in exponential notation with exactly 6 digits after the decimal point.
  4. 4For the E-notation output, the value is formatted at full standard precision using an uppercase 'E' delimiter.

Reading your result

The 'Scientific' field shows the number rounded to 6 decimal places alongside a lowercase 'e' and its power of ten exponent (e.g., 1.234568e+8 represents 1.234568 × 10^8). The 'E-notation' field shows the unrounded precision supported by standard 64-bit floats with an uppercase 'E'.

Limitations

The calculation relies on IEEE 754 double-precision floating-point numbers, meaning integers beyond 15–17 significant digits lose precision. It does not output true engineering notation (powers restricted to multiples of 3) or custom significant figure counts.

Common questions

What is the difference between the two outputs?+

The 'Scientific' output specifically rounds the mantissa to 6 decimal places using lowercase 'e', whereas 'E-notation' preserves full floating-point precision and displays an uppercase 'E'.

What does a negative exponent mean?+

A negative exponent, such as 1.2e-4, indicates a value less than 1, equivalent to 1.2 divided by 10 to the 4th power (0.00012).

Can this calculator handle extremely large or small numbers?+

It handles values within standard JavaScript float limits, roughly between 10^-324 and 10^308. Values beyond this range evaluate to 0 or Infinity.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
