About the Exponent Calculator

The Exponent Calculator computes the result of raising a base number to a specified power or exponent. It is widely used by students, engineers, scientists, and programmers to evaluate powers, calculate exponential growth, and simplify mathematical expressions.

Base
The number being multiplied repeatedly by itself, which can be positive, negative, or fractional.
Exponent
The power to which the base is raised, which can be positive, negative, zero, or a decimal.

Formula and method

Result = b^e
  • bBase number
  • eExponent (power)
  • ResultThe base multiplied by itself e times (or its mathematical equivalent for negative and fractional powers)

The calculator evaluates the power using standard exponentiation (b raised to the power e). The computed value is formatted to a maximum of 10 decimal places for display.

Worked example

How to use the Exponent Calculator

  1. 1Enter the base value b into the Base input field.
  2. 2Enter the power value e into the Exponent input field.
  3. 3The tool raises the base to the power of the exponent (b^e).
  4. 4View the computed power displayed under Result, rounded to up to 10 decimal places.

Reading your result

The result displays the numerical value of b^e. For a positive integer exponent, it represents multiplying the base by itself e times; for a negative exponent, it represents 1 divided by the base raised to the positive exponent.

Limitations

The calculator uses standard 64-bit floating-point arithmetic, meaning values exceeding approximately 1.79e+308 overflow to Infinity. It does not compute complex numbers, so raising a negative base to a non-integer exponent results in NaN.

Common questions

What happens when the exponent is zero?+

Any non-zero base raised to the power of zero equals 1 (for example, 5^0 = 1). In standard JavaScript arithmetic, 0^0 also evaluates to 1.

How do negative exponents work?+

A negative exponent indicates the reciprocal of the base raised to the positive exponent. For example, 2^(-3) equals 1 / (2^3) = 1/8 = 0.125.

Can I use fractional or decimal exponents?+

Yes. A fractional exponent represents a root; for example, an exponent of 0.5 represents the square root (9^0.5 = 3), provided the base is not negative.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
