About the Rent Proration Calculator

The Rent Proration Calculator calculates partial-month rent from the monthly rent, occupied days, and days in the billing month that you enter. It uses your explicit day counts rather than calculating occupancy from move-in or move-out dates. With the default inputs of $1,800, 12 occupied days, and a 30-day billing month, daily rent is $60.00 and prorated rent is $720.00.

Monthly rent ($)
The rent charged for a full billing month, in dollars, with a default of $1,800.
Occupied days (days)
The number of days to charge rent within the billing month, in days, with a default of 12.
Days in billing month (days)
The length of the billing month used to calculate daily rent, in days, with a default of 30.

Formula and method

D = M / B; P = D × O = M × O / B. With the default inputs: D = $1,800 / 30 = $60.00 per day; P = $60.00 × 12 = $720.00.
  • MMonthly rent in dollars.
  • OOccupied days charged within the billing month.
  • BDays in the billing month used as the divisor.
  • DDaily rent in dollars per day.
  • PProrated rent in dollars for the entered occupied days.

Divide monthly rent by the entered billing-month days to obtain daily rent, then multiply that rate by the entered occupied days to obtain prorated rent. Retain full precision during calculation and express the dollar outputs to two decimal places.

How to use the Rent Proration Calculator

  1. 1Enter the full monthly rent in dollars; the default is $1,800.
  2. 2Enter the occupied days to be charged; the default is 12.
  3. 3Enter the billing-month day count; the default is 30.
  4. 4Confirm that the billing-month day count is positive and that occupied days are between zero and that count.
  5. 5Review the daily rent and prorated rent outputs; the defaults produce $60.00 per day and $720.00, respectively.

Reading your result

Daily rent shows the monthly rent allocated to one day using your entered billing-month length: $60.00 with the defaults. Prorated rent shows the charge for all entered occupied days: $720.00 for 12 days with the defaults. The prorated amount is the partial-month rent charge, not an additional charge on top of full monthly rent.

Limitations

This calculator assumes rent is allocated evenly across the entered billing-month days. It does not infer dates, determine whether move-in or move-out days are chargeable, or verify the proration method required by your lease or local law. Billing-month days must be greater than zero; monthly rent and occupied days should be nonnegative. For a single-month calculation, occupied days should not exceed billing-month days. Periods spanning billing months should be calculated separately for each month. Deposits, utilities, fees, discounts, and other adjustments are not included, and lease-specific rounding rules may affect the final amount due.

Common questions

Should I enter the actual number of days in the month or always use 30?+

Use the day-count basis required by your rental agreement and applicable rules. If rent is prorated using actual calendar days, enter that month's length. If an agreed fixed 30-day basis applies, enter 30; the calculator does not choose the basis for you.

Does the calculator count my move-in or move-out day?+

No. You enter occupied days directly, so determine which dates are chargeable under your rental agreement before entering the count.

Why do the default inputs produce $720.00 in prorated rent?+

Dividing $1,800 by 30 billing-month days gives $60.00 per day. Multiplying $60.00 by 12 occupied days gives $720.00.

Can I use one occupied-day count for a stay that crosses billing months?+

Calculate each billing month separately using its applicable monthly rent, day-count basis, and occupied days, then add the prorated amounts. A single calculation uses only one billing-month divisor.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
